Poor partworks timing

With a couple of new partworks arriving in newsagents today – Build a Dollshouse in some places, Classic Pocketwatches in others – it is unfair to lob such volume on newsagents on the second last trading day of the month.

I love partworks, usually – many newsagents don’t.  Publishers and distributors would get more engagement from newsagents if they let us choose if we took them and if they let us set our own initial allocation. Instead, we have an archaic system that fails newsagents and consumers.  The distributor, makes money moving stock in and out. The publisher gets subscriptions offer promoted for very little cost. They ought to treat us with more respect.

Network Services lets newsagents down on James Bond DB5 partwork series

Changes by Network Services around the handling of supply of and backorders for the James Bond DB5 partwork are causing newsagents and their customers considerable frustration, lost time and, in some cases lost money. And the company appears to care less about it.

For some time now we have had issues on backorder to address undersupply issues.  Around two weeks ago, network advised that they had cancelled all backorders. We called customer service and they advised that we would have to reorder issues and that they would be firm sale. We were also told that as our orders had been cancelled by Network and reorder would place us at the bottom of the queue.

Regulars here would know that I am a big fan of partworks. These flip flops and poor customer service from Network challenge that commitment. Their ineptitude in relation to the James Bond DB5 make us look bad. For a meagre margin it’s not worth it with this title.

Good timing for RB7 partwork launch

I love the display and tactical placement promoting the launch issue of RB7 created by the team at one of my stores. With partworks this year accounting for more than 10% of magazine sales and attracting new traffic and with the grand prix in town it makes sense to jump on this opportunity.

This is a simple yet effective display in the right location to drive maximum commercial benefit for us. It helps that it has a local connection.

Who can predict partworks sales?

While the animal farm partwork has been slower than expected, sales of the first issue of the helicopter partwork has been good. However, I suspect sales will face quickly because of the price point and highly specialists nature.

Cake Decorating is the best in recent history. I do wish these things were more predictable so we could manage space and time more effectively.

Using partworks to assist other magazine titles

Here is how we have been using the highly successful Cake Decorating partwork to drive sales of other titles. We have the partwork at either end and have placed six pockets of food themed titles in the middle. While titles like Better Homes and Gardens sell exceptionally well elsewhere, this additional location is an opportunity to grab extra sales.

While magazine sales are declining in many newsagencies, newsagents who obsess about product adjacencies and engage in co-location can achieve an increase in sales. This is where we can shine and prove our credentials as magazine specialists.

If we act in an average way magazine sales will fall.

Launching My Animal Farm

We have the new partwork, My Animal Farm, at the front of the newsagency, facing into the shopping mall. You can see it’s next to the start of our plush department. This adjacency makes sense given both products appeal to the same shopper.

National TV advertising starts today. I urge newsagents to make sure they have the title in prime position – to leverage the TV campaign for maximum benefit.

An example of the value of partworks

I checked our sales numbers at the weekend to see the performance of the Cake Decorating series. In a week we sold more than 30 copies.  This is by issue 20, well into the series.

While we have been helped by certain supply, for which I thank Network Services, we have driven the success with good placement and co-location.

Beyond the sales of Cake Decorating itself, our sales of baking and cake decorating titles are up, there is a solid knock-on effect of a successful partwork series.

While some shoppers get putaways, most come in a purchase off the shelf. Since we are in a shopping centre with more irregular shoppers than a high street or rural newsagency this makes sense.

Cake Decorating is a valuable success for us.

That said, not all partworks are as successful. The key is to fully embrace every opportunity as it’s the only way to learn if a new title will work for you.

Footnote: Herein lies the schizophrenia of the newsagent / magazine distributor relationship.  Yesterday I complained about network sending me a fishing title I had no hope of selling (kept it for six weeks and it didn’t sell) and today I praise them for helping me achieve excellent sales week in week out for this port work. We inhabit a strange space.

Looking forward to My Animal Farm part series

I like the look of the My Animal Farm partwork series coming from DeAgostini through Gordon and Gotch launching February 11. It’s appealing to an important demographic for us. Newsagents will be tagged in the TV commercial which commences February 13.

We promote partworks aggressively and they are currently tracking at 9.22% of our overall magazine sales. We promote them because they are a valuable point of difference for us occasional supply issues notwithstanding.

Promoting Christmas Special of Cake Decorating

Here’s another good initiative by our team. Yesterday, we received this Christmas Special issue of Cake Decorating. As there was no marketing collateral provided (ugh!!!), our team created this poster to draw extra attention to the Christmas theme.

The display is placed in the usual location for this partworks. It’s passed by newspaper customers too. We are looking at including the partwork in one of our main floor Christmas displays.

Newsagents embarrassed and hurt by Partworks supply failure

One of the most common magazine supply complaints I hear from newsagents relates to partworks supply and the difficulty in getting backorders to help partworks collectors complete their collection.  Here is an email I received from a colleague newsagent that outlines a current concern:

I have had a few issues with missing parts for partworks recently and feel that all the responsibility falls onto the newsagent.

When an item is back ordered and it takes time to arrive they go outside of their return dates and become firm sale.

So we have to take it on firm sale because the distributor/supplier did not have enough parts, and in doing the right thing for the customer we have to take the risk.

I have a current instance where I have a back order for number 68 of the James Bond DB5 model.  The customer has spend in excess of $1300 and has been waiting more than 10 weeks for a part.

They are now hesitant to pick up parts as they feel it may not arrive (and NDC does not impart a great deal of confidence that it will).

This has also happened with other partworks, and customers drop off because parts have to be back ordered, so we do the legwork early and then due to short deliveries we miss out on the sales further down the track.

Anyway, this one case has been a bone of contention (and to make it that little bit harder this particular customer is profoundly deaf so all communications is on a sheet of paper!).  Thought it might make a good blog post.

The issue outlined here is often experienced by newsagents. Magazine distributors and partworks publishers need to find a better solution for newsagents and partworks collectors.

Making the most of the Cake Decorating opportunity

We have sold more than 110 copies of the Cake Decorating partwork and are contemplating ordering more stock as we are very close to selling out. We are making the most of the opportunity by placing additional food titles next to this second location of the partwork near newspapers.

I firmly believe that we create our own success and that this starts with personal accountability. These beliefs see us use highly advertised products, like cake decorating, to sell other items. We do this by their location in store and product adjacencies. The result is a higher return from the launch issue prices at $1.99. Promote only the $1.99 item and you get a $1.99 sale. Promote it with other items appealing to the same consumer and you drive far more efficient business from the $1.99 appeal.

DeAgostini agrees to Woolworths trial of cake decorating partwork

I am told that UK publisher DeAgostini has agreed to a trial in Woolworths outlets for the Cake Decorating partwork which has launched in Australia.  While only a trial in 30 Woolworths stores, this is a move set to hurt newsagents, long term supporters of partworks and the only retailers capable of handling the customer service queries and requirements around partworks.

Shame on DeAgostini and Network Services for this.

UK publisher Eaglemoss abuses newsagents with Chess partwork

The DC Chess Collection partwork from UK publisher Eaglemoss is being sold incomplete through our channel.  It turns out that customers who want to complete the collection with the chess board can only do this by subscribing direct.

This is appalling, an abuse of our channel.

The requirement that you can only get the chess board by subscribing through Eaglemoss is disrespectful of newsagents who so strongly support partworks.

That we have a magazine distributor that could allow newsagents to be abused in this way is disappointing.

Unless Eaglemoss recants, this is one partwork I will no longer support.

Target selling the Dora partwork

Check out the photo sent to me over the weekend by a newsagent showing the new Dora partwork on display in their local target store.

Shame on whoever allowed this to happen. Newsagents have been the go-to retailers for partworks in Australia. We have served the category well with prime placement, strong VM support and after sales service unlike any other retailer could deliver.

Those involved owe newsagents an explanation.  If they care.

Launching the new DC Chess Collection

We are promoting the launch of the DC Chess Collection partwork with this display facing the shopping mall for all passers-by to see.

While not expected to be a massive seller – given the specialist interest in chess – we are giving it the usual treatment. we are not our customers after all.

Partworks continue to do well for us, bringing in new shoppers to get to know us.

Promoting How Your Body Works

Check out the display the creative team at one of my newsagencies has put up for How Your Body Works.  It’s bold, eye catching and sure to help us make the most we can from the launch of this partwork.

I love how the stock has been used to create a background for the poster.  This is smart visual merchandising.

It’s at the front of the shop attracting browsers from the mall.

Three partworks launches set to drive traffic to newsagencies

Network Services has announced to newsagents details of three partworks launches with each being exclusively distributed in the newsagency channel. Click here for the flyer.

The big launch is Cake Decorating with a large marketing budget for in-store and TV promotion. I was concerned that Cake decorating may be distributed to supermarkets. Thankfully, this is not the case.

I like partworks – for the traffic and the easy upsell. I love that these titles are exclusive to our channel.

Is Network Services considering launching a new partwork series in Coles and newsagents?

I’m told that the ACP Magazines subsidiary Network Services is considering launching Cake Decorating, a new partwork title, through Coles and newsagents.

This would break the exclusivity newsagents have had over partworks titles. It would mean the TVC promotes one national brand – Coles – and newsagents.

If my information is right and Network Services does launch Cake Decorating from UK Publisher DiAGOSTINI through newsagents and Coles it would damage the newsagency channel. It would reinforce Coles as a go to retailer for magazines even though Coles would probably not offer the full service put away service offered by newsagents.

Magazine publishers using Network Services and magazine publishers more widely should be concerned by the possible impact of this move.

The only reason I could see Coles wanting to do this would be for the traffic boost from the TVC promotion issue 1. The publisher and their Australian representatives would want the back end subscription business.

Network may say that they have been forced into the move because fewer newsagents are engaging with artworks. I’d want to see evidence of this. Too often suppliers make claims about newsagents and then baulk at proving their claims.

If I am wrong and Cake Decorating will be exclusive to newsagents then I will be thrilled and apologise for shouting off here. If I am write and it will also launch in Coles – shame on you Network and ACP  – your support for the channel you say is important to you is noted.

Loving The Ultimate Marvel Graphic Novel partwork

We are loving the launch of the The Ultimate Marvel Graphic Novel partwork this week. The product, collateral and TVC combine to make this a visually stunning and high-profile launch.

Check out the display created by one of our team members. This is fantastic.  Click on the image to see a larger version.

I’ve seen the TVC and, yes, it tags newsagents. Folks this product is exclusive to us and we all should be making the most of the opportunity. That’s what we are doing with this display at the front of the store, facing into the mall.

Leveraging supplier TV commercials

With the TV campaign launching the Agatha Christie The Complete Collection partwork in full swing we have the title in front of shoppers at the counter as well as another location in0-store. Now is the time to make the move to grab the incremental business … on the back of a considerable TV spend.  As I see it we have a couple of weeks to make the maximum return from the launch of a part series so it’s worth investing prime space to achieve this.

Newsagents are the only retailers tagged in the TVC.

Promoting the Agatha Christie partwork

We are promoting The Agatha Christie Book Collection, the first of four partworks coming out over the next month or two, in each of my newsagencies.

Regulars here would know the I love new partwork series. I love that newsagents have these products exclusively. I love the traffic generated by the TV campaigns. I also love that artwork customers are more likely to purchase other items in-store than, say, newspaper shoppers.

For these reasons we give prime space to the promotion of new partwork series in the first couple of weeks. That’s what we are doing with the launch issue of The Agatha Christie Book Collection.
