NAB pays to win on Derby Day

The advertising department has trumped editorial again at The Age. This stuck-on ad for the National Australia Bank obscures the promotion of a derby Day feature. So much for The Age supporting horse racing in Victoria.

At least the stuck-on ad technology being used now means less ads are likely to be ripped off by customers to litter newsagencies and surrounds. However, when you do take off the ad you;re left with a mess:

Ar the folks at The Age newspaper people who respect the masthead or bean counters only interested in the dollar?

It is sad to see the advertising team win over editorial.

Another stuck-on ad covering editorial

age_sat27.JPGWhile the folks at The Age have spared their masthead, they have allowed the National Australia Bank to pay to cover park of the photo on the front page of the Domain section of today’s newspaper.

Beyond my dislike of these stuck-on ads, they disrespect the creative team behind the newspaper and they frustrate customers. The folks at NAB will win themselves no friends from this ad today.

Covering the front page

trib.JPGThe International Herald Tribune goes one up on the post-it notes used by Fairfax back in Australia with this wraparound for the Sheraton hotel group today. I am not sure if this only on Tribunes in transit areas or all copies in Hong Kong.

So much for the importance of the front page to sell the newspaper. I wonder how design and editorial staff feel.

The Age defiles itself

age_aug11.JPG

Stuck on top of the coat of arms on the masthead for The Age newspaper is this garish post it type ad. It defiles the newspaper brand. This ad also seeks to take sales away from retailers and shift them to home delivery. As a retail only newsagent I am not happy about this. Given the evolving financial model for home delivery it is not ideal either since newsagents are carrying more risk from these publisher deals. That aside, my main issue is with the desecration of the masthead.

Masthead trash on The Age newspaper again

age_jul22.JPG

While newspaper professionals in the US debate whether to include advertisements on the front page, the advertising department at The Age demonstrates, again, its dominance over design and editorial with a bold post it note type ad stuck over the masthead for the Mt Buller ski resort. Customers hate these ads. They increase trash and the damage the product when ripped off.

Ads on the front page

Mark Friesen, a news designer at The Oregonian in Portland, Oregon reports at his blog about the consideration being given at The Los Angeles Times to start permitting advertisements on the front page.

I should send Friesen a copy of The Age with ads and a post it type ad stuck on the masthead.

I wonder what designers within Fairfax would say about the debate in the US.

Age newspaper masthead desecration

The Age newspaper today has another stuck on ad across the masthead on page one:

Here is the damage caused by lifting the Commonwealth Bank Mastercard ad from the masthead:

age_june05_after.JPG

There are two slight tears along the lines of the adhesive. I can’t tell what Epicure “goes”. I can’t see the second person in the photo on the right.

There are not many professional newspaper people who would put advertising revenue ahead of their newspaper product in this way.
