Strong Peppa Pig Hallmark card stand interest

peppabigWe’ve had the Hallmark Peppa Pig stand for under a week in our Peppa Pig corner and it’s working a treat.

The branding is excellent – the way it owns the whole stand. This is what attracts the target audience and they bring parents and grandparents who buy.

It’s a retailers joy to watch.

The success of this stand from Hallmark is a perfect example of the value supporting licenced products that are backed by a company that understands the value of strong brands.

Products can be more important than the newsagency shingle in attracting shoppers

bigwatchThese oversize watches, standing a metre tall, have worked a treat attracting shoppers, getting them thinking of the business differently than would be usual for a newsagency shingle.

The watches are a perfect example of the value of using products as a shingle with which to attract shoppers than the shingle itself.

People smile when they see the watches. Kids drag their parents in.

The shingle Newsagent or Newsagency is burdened by history and the performance of others whereas these oversized watches represent fun and get people in without the bias or expectation of the shingle.

Sometimes, what we stock and how and where we place it can me more important than the name of the business stuck above our front door.

These big watches say something about the newsagency that could not be easily pitched in marketing.

Smart buying and good merchandising are activities we need to view as an extension of our business marketing.

Men’s Health ideal for Father’s Day

manshfdayWe have Men’s Health magazine being pitched with Father’s Day cards by placing the Win a $5000 Shopping Spree stand next to our Father’s day card display at the front of the newsagency. the placement is worth more than this as magazine shoppers notice the Father’s Day cards as much as card shoppers notice the magazines.

Superheroes are in

superheroesWe are having terrific success with superhero themed products from plush to figurines to cards to pillows. The male-skewed superheroes such as Superman, Batman and Spiderman are particularly popular for us.

What works especially well is placement in locations to interrupt destination shopping. This drives impulse purchases.

Leveraging popular superheroes has been a terrific way to grow plush and toy sales for us.

A terrific local kids products supplier

justkiddinJust Kiddin is a small Melbourne based business – offering Australian designed tents that are ideal for the newsagency customer.

Weighing close to only 1kg, these tents can be displayed in almost any situation from the floor to the ceiling. They sell easily. They also support a terrific margin.

We have had them for a year and I’m thrilled with the result.

Information can be more valuable than a discount

snakeInformation is key to being able to sell products. Indeed, information can help us generate more money in the bank than a discount off invoice when purchasing a product.

By that I mean: a discount is only valuable when you sell an item and information is what can help you sell an item.

Take this snake. I have found out from the supplier – Wild Republic – that it sells well in garden centres for people wanting to put in their garden. I’d only ever thought of it as a toy. Now I see it as more than that. I have new customers I can pitch it to. Plus I have new visual merchandising ideas.

While I can buy the snake at a terrific discount off invoice, it is the information about the other customers for the snake that is of more use for me as this is what will see a greater financial contribution to the business from sales of the snakes.

Coming of age at the Melbourne Gift Fair

giftsIn two days at the Reed Gift Fair and the Home & Giving Fair in Melbourne on the weekend and talking with many wholesalers, not once did someone say they do not supply newsagents, not once did someone criticise our channel. Indeed, man suppliers talked about enjoying dealing with newsagents because of the healthier traffic we have compared to many gift shops.

The reception this year for newsagents is the best I have ever experienced in many years coming to these fairs.

And so it begins

giftfairAcross multiple venues and under various names what we all call Melbourne Gift Fair starts today. I’m spending today at the convention centre at the Reed Fair. Tomorrow I’ll be at Home & Giving. Monday will be back at Reed getting back for more time at places of particular interest and Tuesday I’ll be back at Home & Giving spending more time on the stand my software company has.

Every year at least five years now the number of newsagents attending has increased. I expect the trend will continue this year. The best advice I can give a first time attendee is: You are not your customer.

27 million YouTube views make this a must-have product for newsagents

I first heard about Poo Pourri from a supplier at the start of this year. Not long after we started pre promotion to customers, long before the product arrived and long before it featured on the Sunrise TV show.

Going out early with pre release marketing connected shoppers with the product and the newsagency. While others only started promoting when it arrived, we had been out there for ages having fun with this unique product.

Watch this video to find out what I am talking about.

Poo Pourri is from Gibson. They started selectively offering it early this year. The first shipment sold out. So did the second shipment. While product has only recently arrived, forward orders suggest this will be a hit product for a long time.

While some newsagents focus only on the price the purchase a product for, sometimes the insights and information you can access through a supplier relationship are more valuable.

You can only bank sales revenue. Good information helps you drive sales.

Now watch the video and have a laugh. Tomorrow I’ll show you the poster in one of my stores – it’s hilarious.

Melbourne Gift Fairs less than a week away

melhgThe Melbourne gift fairs are a few days away – hundreds of newsagents will attend.

I know some who are flying in for the full five days. Most will dedicate at least two days.

These fairs in Melbourne and the same in Sydney are the go to events for anyone serious about gift retailing. Even stands of products that are not appropriate for your business can be inspiring from a visual merchandising perspective.I’ve been going for years and have been urging newsagents through this blog to go.

If you’re in Melbourne for the fairs and want to catch up let me know.

Retro products work in a newsagency

nostalgiatoysWe continue to have success with retro products from mugs to magnets to retro toys like these pushing puppets.

I love seeing an older shopper showing them to someone. You know if they pick it up the chances of them purchase increase dramatically.

We have had these on the shop floor – near our greeting cards – for just on a week and have sold four. I’m happy with that. The margin is excellent.

Happy products make for happy selling

happytravelI love the new range of Happy Traveller products from TNW. We have them outside our travel section facing into the dance floor so that more shoppers can see them. They’re a good value easy impulse purchase item. They also bring colour and a good vibe to the shop.

You are not your customer

fartpenI did not expect the Fart Pen in our impulse / counter lines range to sell all that well. I was wrong. In a couple of weeks we close to selling out. On any measure that’s a good stock turn. Take-aways I’ve been reminded of from this are: I am not my customer, don’t judge, people like fun products and people don’t always buy a gift for why you think.

The most important of these take0aways is having products that make customers smile. Happy customers spend more. They are also more likely to remember the shop. It’s a delight when people tell you why they are purchasing a product like this.

Terrific Gift HQ event in Brisbane

gifthqbneWhile the organisation was poor leading up to the event and there was a glitch with getting visitors in in a timely manner, once inside retailers visiting the Gift HQ gift fair in Brisbane yesterday were treated to a good mix of products. I enjoyed getting to see some products that will be at bigger fairs in a few weeks in advance and ahead of the rush. Smaller fairs are easier to navigate and there is less stress for suppliers.

Gift HQ is running through to Monday afternoon. If you’re in Brisbane it’s a few hours well spent.

Using local products to strengthen your local voice

tinytracksThese Tiny Tracks CDs are produced by a local musician and they feature his arrangements and instrumentations of international music hits – in the form of lullabies to help kids relax and sleep. They are uniquely Australian product showing off Australian entrepreneurship.

Having Tiny Tracks at the counter or in the gift department enables us to promote the local connection and thereby give the business greater credibility in its local pitch.

Mother Hen, the company behind Tiny Tracks, is a preferred supplier to nextra and newsXpress. They will supply any newsagent.

This week I am drawing attention to several local suppliers newsagents could consider. Stocking products from these and similarly local suppliers adds credibility to our shop local pitch. To me, local products are products made and / or designed in Australia. If my newsagency was in a country area my focus would be more on products sourced even closer to home.

Jungle Ants a fresh take on an old toy product

kidsholidaysjungleantsWe have brought in Jungle Ants in time for school holidays as part of broader story we plan to tell on activity related gifts / toys.

Ant farms have been around forever and it’s terrific to see them packaged in a fresh and enticing way as these Jungle Ants are. We’ve got a whole new generation of kids to introduce these fun things to.

Planning ahead for school holidays is more important than ever for newsagents as we compete more with toy shops and gift shops. School holidays and excellent opportunity to entice new shoppers into our stores. It’s the time for fresh – non-traditional – window displays that speak to the kids and young families who are out in force during this time.

At Christchurch Gift Fair

chcI’m at the Winter Gift & Homeware Fair in Christchurch and enjoying looking at gift opportunities from a different perspective. With some  common suppliers between Australia and New Zealand this fair is proving to be a good opportunity for catching up away from the business of Australian trade shows.

I never would have visited your shop

attractingcustomersA customer visited the newsagency a couple of days ago, spending in excess of $40. They make a point of telling us that they visited because of this Happy Jackson range from Tinco facing into the mall. They said they had never shopped with us before.

This is an excellent example of a non newsagency product attracting a new shopper into the newsagency.

The feedback from the customer is an encouragement to focus on more opportunities like this.

Is the Wild product range evolving?

wildcardsSome who have been watching the Wild Cards and Gifts shops since the take over of the group by UK Newsagent retailers WH Smith have noticed recent changes to their focus. The gifts they are pitching are more often now gifts you’d see in Australian newsagencies than was the case under the old ownership.

If this is indeed a trend it will blur the lines between newsagencies and the Wild businesses. This will be especially interesting to watch in locations where newsagencies and Wild compete for the same nearby shopper.

Leveraging the Monopoly brand for gift sales

monopolyWe are testing interest in the Monopoly brand with a selection of Monopoly themed gifts as one of several new brand stories for Winter. With Monopoly being a winter rainy day game for many we figured this is a good time of the year to promote this brand.

We have the range displayed adjacent to cards – promoting it as a gift with card opportunity.

Gift range drives return business for the newsagency

gorjusIn March I wrote about the Gorjus range from Artique and how this range appeals to the Frankie magazine customer. Now, two months on, we have good data of Gorjus shoppers returning for more purchases. carrying this range has helped drive shopper traffic. What’s even more important is that the particular shopper attracted is more valuable than an average newsagency shopper: higher average spend, longer in the shop and they often buy magazines.

Our experience is evidence of gifts driving magazine and other sales as well as gift sales.

Today is going to be crazy for plenty of newsagents

Today will be just about the biggest day of card and gift sales of the retail year for plenty of newsagents. If it is like other Saturdays before Mother’s days many newsagents will do ten, even twenty times their usual Saturday card sales. And plenty of those will do just as much in gift sales. It will also be a day of excellent magazine sales as magazines make a great Mother’s day gift!

So, as you strap on your armour, lead up with caffeine and paint on your happy face think about the joy you’re bringing shoppers, they work you;re giving your team and the money you’ll make.

Today is a good day in retail. Enjoy!

Mugs lead in Mother’s Day sales

mumscupsThese mugs have been an even bigger hit for us this week leading up to Mother’s Day. Customers say they are an easy gift.  In fact, yesterday it was like people were lined up to buy them. It helps that they are merchandised in a spinner and that they come with a box – making them an easy gift to wrap.
