Promoting the Doggy Bank

forest-impulse-ch.JPGWe are promoting the Doggy Bank in a dump bin in one of my stores with good success.  While it had been selling we wanted to kick sales along so we went for this impulse approach.  It has worked a treat.  The high traffic location plus a sign telling our customers that this is an ideal Christmas gift is driving good sales.  Being in a dump bin, we can easily move this as needs for space through the week change.  The best location has been where customers line up for the counter.

A unique Christmas range

pudding-lady.JPGWe are enjoying good success with this range of delicious Christmas treats from The Pudding Lady in Newcastle.

We have Christmas cake, shortbread, Christmas pudding with Brandy sauce and White Christmas.  We also have some nice salad dressing packs and marinating packs.

The range is very different to what customers see in a newsagency. While priced at the high side, the product gives off a feeling of quality – worth the reasonably high (for a newsagency) price point.

I first discovered the range at the Reed Gift Fair in Sydney a few months ago.

M-Cups – the ideal impulse Christmas gifts

mcups.JPGWho would have thought that newsagents could sell measuring cups at the counter as an impulse line five or so years ago?  The M-Cups are going great … with shoppers off all ages.  They connect with the foodie interest right now.  We are promotting them with our food titles as well as at tthe counter.  The counter position is the winner.  Christmas gifts under $20 are selling very well this Christmas.

Interest in digital scrapbooks

baby-scrapbook.JPGThe range of digital scrapbooks we have from Hallmark are generating good interest.  They have been on the shop floor for a couple of weeks and we have sold some already.  This is good considering the uniqueness of the products. It will take a while for us to learn how to help sell them …while some will purchase on impulse, others will need help.

I like that the digital scrapbooks are themed, like the baby one in the photo.  This gives us a unique gift to offer for this occasion.

Interactive gifts are certainly in.

Recordable memory albums popular

talking-albums.JPGCustomers are loving these recordable memory albums from Hallmark.  They make a terrific gift – an easy sell for someone wanting to inject something of themselves into the gift.

In our stores serving an older population, the idea of recording more of your memories takes on a special meaning. I’m glad we got access to these products on their first round launch – we are out there competing with the majors and loving it.

Gift cards for Christmas

blackhawk-giftcards-art1.jpgInterest in gift cards is increasing as shoppers start to consider their Christmas shopping plans.  I am glad that we established ourselves well in this space well in advance of the season.

While the iTunes gift cards and the most popular in the Blackhawk range, gift cards from Sanity, Jay Jays, Mitre 10, Dymocks, Super Cheap Auto and Angus and Robertson are also popular.

The gift cards are being sold with a greeting card more than 75% of the time, meaning a nice margin add-on for an already high margin sale.

While newsagents cannot build their future off the sales of gift cards , they can bank a higher margin from existing shopper traffic. This is the important next step to navigating to the future – building a better business today off of the traffic we have today.

The number of newsagents selling gift cards continues to grow solidly.

The latest extension to the gift card range further leverages existing newsagent traffic even further. The smartbox range offers experiences in a unique format for newsagencies. The price point provides another excellent margin building opportunity for newsagents.

The season for teacher gifts

teacher-gifts.JPGThis display of gifts for teachers at our counter is generating good interest.  We have it placed next to graduation gifts.  These teacher gifts are ideal for primary and low to mid high school.  They are at a good price point – an easy impulse purchase decision.

End of year teacher gifts are another opportunity for leveraging better business from our good existing traffic.

Christmas gift set to sell out

appmagnets.JPGWe have had these App Magnets in for a week today and have sold 80% of our initial stock.  We placed them at the counter, in an excellent impulse purchase location.

Their success reinforces for me the value of existing good traffic in newsagencies and how careful buying is central to leveraging the traffic for good value impulse business.  Their success also demonstrates the value of tactical placement over attractive displays for some products.

Christmas gift collects money for charity

dog-moneybox.JPGWe placed the Doggy Bank at our counter to show off what we expect to be a popular Christmas gift.  We placed it out of the box so that customers could see how it works – check out this YouTube video of it in action.  This is the kind of item which needs to be demonstrated.  While we have a coin to use in a demonstration, customers are proving to be happy to use their own coins and leave them in the box for charity.  The money collecting dog is giving lots of pleasure.

Graduation impulse offer

graduation-2010.JPGWe have placed a small graduation display at the counter to  promote the start of the 2010 graduation season. With space in our temporary location limited, we are focusing on small plush items which have been successful for us in the past.  We are using a couple of graduation cards as a back drop.  Most of our customers are in the grandparent age range. Other newsagencies serving a broader age range have success with albums, photo frames, books, larger plus and other items as graduation gifts.

Blackhawk gift card sales take off in newsagencies

blackhawk-giftcards-art1.jpgI am seeing excellent sales numbers for the Blackhawk gift cards with iTunes gift cards leading the pack followed by Sanity, Jay Jays, Mitre 10, Dymocks, Super Cheap Auto and Angus and Robertson.

The gift cards are being sold with a greeting card more than 75% of the time, meaning a nice margin add-on for an already high margin sale.

While newsagents cannot build their future off the sales of gift cards, they can quickly and easily bank a higher margin from existing traffic today.  This is the important next step to navigating to the future – building a better business today off of the traffic we have today.

the number of newsagents selling gift cards has quadrupled in the last few months and I expect that to grow considerably over the next few weeks as we head into the prime gift card season.

The latest extension to the gift card range further leverages existing newsagent traffic even further.  The smartbox range offers experiences in a unique format for newsagencies. The price point provides another excellent margin building opportunity for newsagents.

Nice Wiggles giftcard tie in

wiggles-giftcard.JPGThe Wiggles gift card we get from Blackhawk is providing a nice tie in for other Wiggles products newsagencies carry.  Many of us carry Wiggles branded cards, wrap, bags and the magazine already.  The giftcard gives us something we can easily sell to these customers in our stores.

The more we target products to the groups of customers we attract to our stores the greater the efficiency we can derive from our customers.

Busy Sydney Gift Fair

It was terrific seeing so many newsagents at the Sydney Gift Fair at Darling Harbour yesterday.  There was plenty to see, I certainly came away with several suppliers I want to do business with.

The fair is laid out by broad categories, making managing your time on the floor of the fair easy.  For example, all jewellery related products are in one section.  And, yes, there were newsagents looking at this category – some who are already having success with jewellery and others considering getting into the area.

The benefits of this fair over Melbourne in July are that it is smaller and housed in one facility.  This makes navigating the stands and buying easier.  There is also a difference between the suppliers at the two fairs.

I would encourage newsagents to visit the Sydney fair over the next three days, it runs until Tuesday, and look at the broad range of gifts, puzzles, toys, books, cards, homewares and jewellery available – be sure to walk the whole floor.  There are opportunities for newsagents in every hall.

When your lease gets in the way of growing your business

cufflinks.JPGThese cufflinks are an ideal add-on to a card purchase.  The pair on the left are an ideal graduation gift for a male while the pair on the right make a nice Father’s Day gift.  Some newsagents in major shopping centres are facing a challenge from their landlord when they try and add items like cufflinks to their gift range since their leases do not explicitly state that they can sell gifts.

All it takes is a complaint from another tenant to get the landlord interested.  In my experience, the landlord tends to side with the more valuable tenant.

I have see situations where the extent of gifts is the store is explicitly limited to a percentage of turnover or floor space.  I have seen the same restriction on confectionery and even books – all traditional lines for newsagents.

A permitted use clause which states that you can carry traditional newsagency lines could be problematic at some point as it is open to interpretation as to what constitutes traditional newsagency lines.  In one case recently, the landlord said that books were not a traditional newsagency line.  The cost of mounting a case to prove otherwise was considerable.

In today’s rapidly changing marketplace, newsagents need to negotiate an appropriately flexible permitted use clause in their lease.  That said, landlords need to be fairer in managing permitted use.  I bet Australia Post did not have greeting cards, gifts, books and even BBQ sets covered in their permitted use clauses yet there was probably no push back.

Blackhawk gift card marketing collateral coming soon

blackhawk_1.jpgTower Systems is in the process of getting final artwork approval on two posters for newsagents selling Blackhawk gift cards.  Developed in-house by the Tower marketing team for exclusive use by the Tower Newsagent network, the posters are designed to encourage sales of gift cards along with greeting cards in newsagencies offering the Blackhawk range. Once Blackhawk approval is obtained, the artwork will be made available.

Selling out of Father’s Day gifts

We have sold out of some of the Father’s Day gifts we purchased especially for the season.  That’s a nice result a few weeks out from the big day and encouraging for expanding the gift department outside of major seasons.

The gifts which have performed best so far are wine related – carry bags, kits, bottle holders.

Plenty of newsagents at Melbourne Gift Fair

At our Tower Systems gift shop software stand at the Melbourne Gift Fair we saw plenty of newsagents over the last five days.  Some were first time attendees looking to expand their retail ofer while others were seasoned hands looking to expand well established gift departments.

While I do not yet have attendance numbers, my feeling is that newsagent numbers are up on previous years.  This is good news for the newsagency channel.

The most recent sales benchmark study also shows good growth from gift sales in newsagencies.

There is no doubt that gifts present an excellent and somewhat easy opportunity for newsagents to grow sales and extend the shopping basket.  The category is also presenting an opportunity for some newsagencies to devolve from the traditional newsagency to a gift shop with a selection of magazines.

Given that we sell 50% of cards sold in Australia, selling gifts to go with the cards makes sense.

The gift channel is maturing too with a better approach to electronic invoices evolving over the last year.

Seeking advice on a gift product

russ_pictures.JPGI am curious as to whether anyone has the Galleria range from RUSS. They are painting reproductions on small canvasses. We have had them for a month and they are not working. We expected them to work very well for us. They are a quality product with a good price point.

It may be our location or something we are doing wrong in our treatment of the product. It could also be that the product is not performing well. I’d be interested to know – especially if the product is working for you. All suggestions gratefully received.

Gifts are a challenge.  get it right and you do very well.  get it wrong (for your demographic) and you lose money.  Every new product is a good learning opportunity.

Promoting healthy Easter gifts

rabbits_20101.JPGOur range of plush rabbits is selling well as Easter gifts.  Besides a good display, sales are helped by regular promotion on our in-store radio and by marketing collateral – both of which are promoting healthy Easter gifts.  What is interesting is that chocolate sales have not been affected by this – indeed, they are strong.  The growth in plush sales is a bonus.

Promoting a healthy Easter

rabbits_2010.JPGWe are promoting alternatives to chocolate as Easter gifts.  This is being done with our in-store displays as well as on our in-store radio.  There was a time we would only chase the egg market.

The broader offer we have today is working very well not only for the season but also positioning us as more of a gift retailer to our customers.  Items like the rabbits in the photo have a considerably better margin than eggs.  They also position us with a point of difference over supermarkets and others in the egg space.

St Patrick’s Day a hit everywhere

st_particks_day_melbourne.JPGWe are having terrific success with St Patrick’s Day in all of our stores, in a range of situations.  The photo shows the rapidly emptying window display at our Sophie Randall Cards and Gifts shop in Melbourne Central.  Our team there used traditional products for the store – bears – to show off some of our St Patrick’s Day items.  It has generated plenty of laughs and some questions about the day itself.

While a minor season, St Patricks Day gives us a great opportunity to show that we are the go-to businesses for all celebrations.  We can easily promote multiple departments: party, cards, gifts and even specialty papers.  To me it is a no-brainer for newsagents to play in this space.

Great gift trade shows in Sydney

The Gift Fair at Darling Harbour and the Home and Giving Fair at Homebush in Sydney yesterday. Both are terrific events, packed with product, business merchandising and business management ideas which newsagents would find useful.

It was good to see many newsagents at the fairs.

If you can get to Sydney today, visiting both fairs would be well worthwhile. You will see excellent new product ideas.

Newsagents are successfully evolving their businesses into the gift space. The best place to start is at these trade shows. Even in our own newsagencies, gifts is one of the fastest growing departments. Why just a couple of weeks ago we sold a lamp priced at over $200 which we brought in as an experiment. It was on display for a couple of weeks.

The key with gifts when walking the trade show floor is to remember that you are not the customer.

Ducks sell out for Easter

easter_chicks.JPGWe are about to sell out of these Easter ducks in all of our stores. The entire stock will be gone after just two weeks on the shop floor. They’re a good deal – a sound toy for under $10. The margin is healthy too. They make for a different Easter gift.

The key with a success like this is to not get too greedy next time. We are better off selling out than taking on too much stock and being left with that. We all know that story.

The ducks are like so many successful gifts in our stores, a value-priced gift targeting kids.

Steve Irwin collectible

steve_irwin.JPGI am not sure how I feel about this Steve Irwin limited edition collectible which we are offering in a few of our stores.  I guess it will appeal fans of the Crocodile Hunter.  It is raising funds for his Zoo and that’s a good thing.  We the statue in the window and it’s certainly drawing attention.

Going out with Easter eggs

fhn_easter_10.JPGWe added Darrell Lea Easter eggs and a range of Easter gifts this week to the Easter cards we put out last week.  We have these at the front of our dance floor on our lease line.  Click on the photo for a larger version of the image.  While it is early to be selling eggs in volume, we know that having the range out now lets customers know we are in the space – so they think of us when they are ready to purchase.

Close by the egg display and the gifts (to the right in the photo), we have our Easter cards in front and out of shot.  This creates a nice Easter area which can be easily shopped – important for the shopper it attracts.  This placement drives efficient sales across the three categories.
