A retail tenancy win for small business in WA

Great news out of WA tonight with the state government announcing 3 months rent free for SMEs that have experiences a 30% decline in turnover. It is backdated to start from March 1, 2020. The government is providing landlords terrific financial support if they waive rent for 3 months for SMEs. The landlords have an excellent incentive because of this.

This is an excellent result from the WA government, a government that continues to deliver terrific results for small business retailers.

NOTE: the 3 months rent free is exactly what ALNA and all the newsagency marketing groups have been agitating for and suggested members write to politicians about.

This would indicate that it is a State Government issue. This has been stated in previous press releases

Graeme, the national cabinet identified retail tenancy as a challenge for states / territories to handle as it falls under them. However, the fed govt has the bulk of the economy under its wing. Hence, it is a national issue with state / territory level implementation. That WA moved first and following lobbying from plenty, led by ALNA in our channel, is good for WA SMEs.

Mark, it’s aState issue W.A. approved the move, same as the Lotteries Stte owned State approval, end of story. You’re drawing a long bow going National as they will refer t to the States. You know this. Last Time we talked this way about States and who’s who etc you accused me a some ties with NANA Ltd Not so whatsoever 20 Years ago I was CEO NANA ltd Resumed my own business again 2003. You know this.
i am pointing out that by not going State to State and appealing to their Soveriegnty you are leaving out the decision maker. Did ALNA you go directly to W.A. State Government ment and not contact all the other State Governments?

Graeme, ALNA, the marketing groups and some others have actively lobbied all state and territory politicians as well as federal, all at once, all with a consistent message.

I am not sure why this is an issue for you.

The story itself is a good story and speaks to an achievement by ALNA and all who have been actively engaged in this.

My point is you have named (email addresses) of all the Federal members (Cabinet)when it’s agreed that it is a State concern. W.A. the Cabinet comprises all State representatives.
By lobbying Sates and pointing out that W.A. has got it right for SME’s which as we all know are the backbone of industry especially Retail, the we are likely to get more push up than form top down.
You seem to push ALNA and claim theire victory yet there is nothing to sunstantiate this again my point is ALNA does not represent ALL newsagents and it isn’t just about newsagents it’s about SME’s
The brief is that we are all SME’s and the Cabinet is about unity. Pharmacy’s are doing the same going it alone as well because they can they have ahold on Govt. re their status and Government relationship. Shopping centres in the main have one or two newsagences max howver there are heaps more leases to other SME’s and to get all on board is better Tower in your own openess disclose that you have hundreds of retail indies not just reailers using your system, which is great A bigger SME picture may just get us the attention we deserve.

Graeme, I shared the federal details as they apply to everyone. I told people to get state details – as surely they can at least do that for themselves. You have read something into me listing federal email addresses as having meaning, which it does not.

ALNA has lead on this issue. They are the only national representative association. I don’t need you to acknowledge their role. However, I will acknowledge and appreciate it.

Tower has been active on this issue and COOVID-19 more broadly since January this year. People know my involvement. No need for a disclosure.

Not sure if that covers your comment and it feels a bit lost.

Leave is that ALNA has done a good job and this campaign is a good campaign and that all involved with SMEs should get behind it.
