I am surprised when I see newspaper customers given a bag for their paper for two reasons – the waste of the plastic, k degradable but plastic nevertheless and, the cost for a micro margin product.
Supermarkets have trained their customers and charge those who forget. Why not newsagents? Maybe too many in our channel are soft on stopping this wastage.
We quit bags for papers a year ago. Lots of complaints from ignorant customers.

And all those ignorant customers get to vote.

The whole execution of introducing a waste saving plastic carry bag by the majors and the extension of small busines piggy backing on this has caused a back lash from consumers.
Nobody can discount the idea that plastic eleimination isn’t a good cause but to insult customers under the guise of environmentilist saviours is a shame for the replacement was not only plastic it was a direct cost to the consumer to pay fro the “new” plastic bags.
Other items within their stores fruit and vegs etc still require and have plastic provided to them. If they were serious they (the chains) would provide paper bags.
Consumer reaction has been one of underconsumption for impulse sales as the consumer will not “duck” into Woolworths or Coles for that quick purchase if they don’t have a bag with them.
Newsagent customers still have a minority of customers that want a “carry bag” for their newspaper purchase as it makes it easier to handle and they may go into other stores that sell newsapares as well.
this doesn’t stop the newsagent asking politely “would you like a carry bag for your papers” or goods purchased.

I do have a Jason as a customer but hes okay. But seriously, asking for a bag for a paper from which we make less in real terms today than a couple of years ago is something to hate about being a newsagent. I will give them a bag but charge for it now.

I understand your frustration with the bag but is it worth upsetting the customer who in all likelyhood would not return?
