For the last five years, it is weekday newspaper over the counter sales that have declined, usually tracking close to or adobe double-digit declines.
I have seen data that indicate in 2019 it is the weekend newspapers that are leading the decline. I’ll know more in a month or so as part of the quarterly benchmark cycle. However, the diverse group of retailers, branded and non branded, indicate the direction.
If this is the case, if weekend newspaper over the counter sales are leading the decline, some publishers will be re-thinking their plans.
We dont see big decline.
Some days we see more sales than normal. But its unpredictable.
Wkend SMH,Wkend Aust are still good and based on some interesting content, sell more too.
People buying the above titles, are serious news consumers and like reading the elaborate summary of all important news that they might have missed the previous 5 days.
Sunday Telegraph still good for the TV program and other sections.

The comment “I’ll know more in a month or so as part of the quarterly benchmark cycle” indicates that the P.OS. Tower and other systems that contribute to this report disclose the Weekend Sat. and Sunday sales of newspapers.
Mark, of the thousands of reports over the years that I have recieved form all the software POS companies there has not been anyone report that has this detail. Some have individual sales Teles heralds etc not broken up into daily sales and those that do are only very few sya 5 over 30 years of collecting this data.
I am not challenging your claim rather than thinking that the people who supply these figures to you for your quarterly Report have criteria set by your Benchmarking standards for you to make this satement.
How can I get this information from the Tower System as it would certainly help te newsagents I deal with?
Thanks for such an informative article.

Not sure about the rate of decline ,Weekend verses Weekday, but all newspapers have been in decline for the last 10 years.
Would be interesting to see a graph of the last 10 years for newspaper circulation numbers.
The publishers would already done their modelling and should know what the tipping point is for their publications .

The way the publishers (News especially) promote digital, you would think they actually WANT you to stop buying the physical newspapers…
