I love this photo that came up in my Twitter feed today. It shows a couple standing out the front of their Seacroft, Leeds, UK newsagent business in 1974.
Such memories ..”News Of The World”. Once the world’s largest English language newspaper. Bought and transformed by Murdoch, rapidly became known as “Screws Of The World” and less charitably “Wanker’s Weekly”. Forced to close following a phone tapping scandal, must rate as Murdoch’s darkest hour.
1974, The Three Day Week with electricity restrictions is my big memory of that year. After working under tilly and gas lamps the previous year the store I was working in hired a circus/fun fair diesel generator with festoons of DC bulbs for illumination to continue trading during power cuts.
