Publishers should check out how the kids magazine area looked at a Melbourne inner city Coles supermarket on the weekend.
And if the excuse is it was there weekend that is no excuse. Any retail business that is open has an obligation to present products in the best possible way. My experience with Coles and magazines is they don’t care themselves.
I agree with the main point you make regarding tidiness of display. But these can be very difficult “magazines” to display neatly, with all the different shapes, sizes and the various add-ons, either stuck on or in the bags. They certainly don’t fit traditional fixtures. What type of fixture do you generally use to display them Mark?

Bruce I use a deep pocket picture that holds the kids magazines and gifts in a tidy way.

We use 3 plastic tubs from Kmart, customers don’t mind flicking through them.

Almost all mags are dropping in sales in my store for the past 5 years. between 10 and 15% per year. (Childrens is not.)
Input required from mag wizards.
I am now in a position with 600 pockets where our GP is about 18K per annum. To make a go of the shop I need at least 18 times this amount.
So mags are 20% of my space, 15%of my labour but only about 5% of my GP.
more GP in Gifts, in Cards, in Stationery.
How can I stay relevant to existing customers and maintain basket depth without them.
Is anyone winning with just 300 or so mags?
