The ANF has rebranded itself with what appears to be a lottery first focus with this announcement:
ANF Announcement
Building strong businesses for our members is at the forefront of our decision making processes at the ANF. The Board consistently reviews and adapts how we can best represent members effectively.
Our commitment to providing our members with the most relevant industry information continues into 2016; we are building on existing relationships with our partners; developing new partnerships and assessing how the channel can grow to continue to be sustainable in the evolving retail and distribution environment.
As part of this work, the ACCC at our request recently included lotteries in our ACCC National Collective Bargaining Authorisation, with the support of Tatts Lotteries. As a result, the ANF board at their most recent meeting, passed a motion to incorporate the word ‘Lottery’ into our trading name as well.
There will be no change to who we are, and what we do to support all members. The inclusion of the word ‘Lottery’ within our trading name is one that makes sense. It recognises that Lotteries have been entrenched within a majority of your retail businesses for many years, and also the important work we already do for members in this area. The change also further strengthens our representation for our members with State and Federal Governments.
The Australian Newsagents’ Federation is undergoing a rebrand and refresh of our company identity. From 1 August 2016 The ANF will trade under the name Australian Lottery and Newsagents’ Association (ALNA).
We will continue to trade under the same ABN and ACN. We will also continue to maintain ownership and hold authorisation of the N logo.
“with the support of Tatts Lotteries”
Well, there ya go.
To an outsider like me it certainly looks as though Tatts Lotteries is now the prominent share holder of what was ANF.
Why the heck would they give Tatts dominance and priority over newsagents in a newsagents Association.
Nah, wouldn’t have been a show of dollars would it……nah……
The head she is spinning………..

Well Lance, as a Director on the ANF board and a long serving and dedicated member of the Tasmanian Lotteries Association I take offence to your comments. If you held any respect for your fellow newsagents/ association members you could have picked up the phone and asked the question of why. Your ignorance of who and what the ANF (now ALNA) represents is displayed by your comment “Tatts Lotteries is now a prominent share holder”(absolute load rubbish). The board of directors are all hard working small business owners, who have NOT and will NOT give Tatts dominance or priority over newsagents. I read Australian Lotteries & Newsagents Ass, therefore encompassing Lotteries West, Tatts, and any other lottery company. Sad to see such a negative slant/ attitude!!

Sue are you able to expand as to why the name change ,beyond the explanation given in the ANF press release
Previously wouldn’t the ANF have already been making representations to Tatts on behalf of its members ?

Sue,
Presumably the marriage followed some discussions on one sided agreements newsagents suffer compared to other Tatta outlets. Can we look forward to some big announcements soon …. naming rights don’t come cheap.

C’mon Sue,
First your in bed with the cigarette companies – you can be open and tell us how much you get from them for rental space etc.
Now the name change that doesn’t really mean anything
What happened with the changes to magazine supplies we were going to see?
Not to mention the rest that we have not seen

Does this mean the ALNF will now accept membership from any business which has a Lotteries agency ? They need to explaine to their members what is actually going on. If they do accept any Lotteries agencies as members we could see them representing for example service stations who already have an advantage over us with fit outs and compliance .These are the businesses who are our Lotteries competitors

The anf, alna, staff and the anf directors have a vested interest in keeping it going because they are the ones who benefit. The staff all get paid and the directors get paid to attend meetings and they get super on top of the pay. Plus they get flown to meetings and given accomodation and other travel expenses. So it stands to reason they all talk up the anf anla.
I think they did the name change because the anf name was damaged because it had achieved nothing for newsagents for years. So the name change is like a rebranding. It makes sense to me.

Well there you go, I’ve said all along that the ANF was in bed with its so called “business partners”. Why not be completely transparent and add in all the others to the new name ie MPA, Western union etc etc. lt has been a nothing for Newsagency association for years and now should be called the ANF Anti Newsagency Federation.

On Friday last week I spoke to NANA after receiving a email about my membership needing to be renewed. I explained I am not renewing my membership with NANA or the ANF (ALNF) as I feel it no longer represents my or Newsagents needs and are more interested in their own survival.
The fact the ANF in conjunction with the tobacco lobby sent out election material for the Senate showed me they are no longer apolitical even when I received an apology stating that the ANF was a apolitical organisation, I simply do not believe them.

I noted in the last issue of the ANF’s glossy magazine
3 pages were devoted to internet “trolls” and how those trolls can be traced but to the author through the ip address and can therefore be prosecuted for defamation
Its important to note that not all the trolling on this blog is done solely by Newsagents others who have been found out are actually staff from our industry “partners”
I found it unusual for the ANF to use 3 pages in a high production cost magazine to point out the obvious.

Wow and the negativity continues. I rarely look at this page, and will make this my last comment, as I can see those who have posted only wish to stay on that same mindset. Firstly, yes I receive a ‘wage’ for attending a board meeting, this ‘wage’ (received only when I have attended a meeting) covers my staff’s wages for the 2 days that I am out of my store, and wow I do get flown to Sydney and stay at a hotel (if you see this as a wonderful bonus, I now understand the negativity you are shrouded in). Our Feb meeting was done via Skype at managements suggestion, looking out for members $s.
My reason for supporting the name change, and for encompassing lotteries in our membership?? For 2 years LAAT (Tas Lotteries Ass) spent a lot of time and money surveying the cost of Tatts shop refits. We then presented to Tatts management our findings (late 2013/early 2014), which then led to quite a few changes to the refit. From our survey LAAT also built the bulk buy process. I believe this was only possible by the expertise and professionalism of Ben Kearney, who is our LAAT Executive Office and also our ANF Manager. The bulk buy process has been hugely successful saving (for many) up to $10,000 on previous quotes. With our approval, Ben shared this info and process with Qld ANF who have adopted the bulk buy process (which is a lot of hard work for our managers), it has now been extended to the DigiPOS signage and the offer from Macquarie Leasing. Seems ridiculous to segregate our Associations at the cost of our members not getting these opportunities to share information, represent for a larger mass and have OFFERS THAT SAVE OUR MEMBERS BIG $s! This is only one of the many projects I have seen over my 2 and half years as an ANF Director and 7 years on the LAAT committee. Personally I am very proud of the goals our LAAT committee and ANF Board have achieved. But I do have a family to cherish, a store to manage, a great committee to work with, and a board who I support. I have no wish to spend any more time justifying to those who will only continue to pick out the worst, my only hope for you, is that you do save your negativity for blogs and show your customers your positive side

Wow Sue,
Great rant, 10 out of 10. I’m sure you do a great job, but please, cut the theatrics and address the issues above.
– why has ANF taken in all lottery outlets, what’s in it for newsagents
– who is eligible to be in ALNA, are the 2 OTR’s within 500 metres of my store now afforded the same consideration as a newsagent (chemists to ?) ?
– what concessions were negotiated for the change in name, surely not for the refit costs you quote

Glad you got that off your chest Sue
now please tell me exactly what the ANF has achieved with Magazines.
oversupply still rampant with newsagents returning more than half their supply.
anf has done sweet nothing on what has long been a financial burden.
Sure, they have been active getting on comittees, but nothing has been achieved to put money back in the pockets of hard working newsagents. Did not hear from them during the floods, did not hear from them during the lousy paper delivery fee increases, did not hear from them after their poor submission to the MPA. Where is their support other than putting money where it does not work.

Sue, it IS a huge negative for newsagents with ANF now in business with lotto.
This opens the door for chemists, petrol outlets, hotels, post offices, corner stores and supermarkets to all be on a Board of ALNA.
This is a great way for the old ANF to increase its membership base and keep everyone at ALNA in a job, but it will NOT be a newsagency association anymore.
