News Corp. coin promotion drives sell out

IMG_8910We were out of the Herald Sun by noon. The distribution newsagent was out too and unable to get more. The coin promotion is the reason. Thankfully, we have some first coins still.

The coin collection started today in NSW – all coins gone by 11am and based on radio reports, this is a common issue in the newsagency network today. My rough assessment is that many coins have gone to customers who wanted it only because it is “free” and who probably have no intention of collecting the series. Some genuine collectors will likely miss out. In my opinion, ALL the coins should be charged for, including the first one. That way, only the genuine collectors will get involved.

Bruce we drove commitment to the series through the promotion of preorders, guaranteeing supply of papers with coins for those who engaged.

Yes Mark – a good idea and we also have a set of pre-orders for regulars who asked us during the lead up to today. But I still stand by my point that the whole series should come at a cost commitment to weed out those who will take the first coin only because it is free and then probably throw it out in five years time.

Newscorp are obviously not interested in making extra money from newspapers during this promotion.
We got no extras and ran out at 12:15 on Saturday and 12:45 today.

We tried to order extras online but it was locked up. News exhibited a message they were formulating extras based on past promotions sales and sending extras to everyone.
Well we never return anything from their promotions. It always sell out. So how can they work out how much extras we should get?
However this morning I find we received exactly the same as last week. Sold out early then.
I doubt that news wants to sell more papers.
They are making $$$ on the product.

My wife has already been abused today by customers angry that we have run out of coins (day 1 & 2). The most annoying thing is that these are people who do not regularly patronise us yet think that the coins being provided to them should be the most important thing in our day. We don’t put any of these promotions aside for customers any more (even the regulars) as it seems wrong to tell some one who has made the effort to come in today for their coin that we have run out while we are keeping them back for people likely to only collect them once a week or at the end of the promotion. We are strictly first in, best dressed and if supplies were adequate this would not be an issue. Agree with charging for the first coin as many only want the free one and if we charged for the first one we would have a better idea of how sales would be from issue 2 onwards.
As for supply of extra papers during these promotions, it is a bit hit and miss but this one was a no brainer and supplies should have been increased generously.

We did not openly display the coins today and relied on customers asking for them. They are the more informed customers who wants to order it. We can’t get extra papers because we are only allowed a certain weight on the plane everyday so no chance getting more papers. I expect that tomorrow we will get a lot more orders.

We had a customer today who wanted 12 coins ,but only wanted to pay for 2 papers. She explained her Newsagent in Adelaide allows her to do this.
Well sorry but we ain’t doing that .
12 coins then pay for 12 papers
If what she said is true, then that Newsagent is doing himself a disservice.

We do allow customers to PAY for the whole series upfront (including the papers) then they can collect at a time which suits them , this seems to work well

Mark, I reckon your customer is having a lend of you.
I couldn’t imagine a business operator doing something as foolish as that, but hey, maybe they are out there…………scary.

These promotions are so badly run. We have battled constantly to get adequate supply of the collectable or the paper on the key days. For this promotion, we have been allocated extra coins which the distributor kindly delivered yesterday. But no extra papers were allocated, so by 12 noon yesterday we sold out of the Advertiser and again with the Mail today. Lots of coins though.

    As an observation :

    – these promotions have a minimal or zero effect on sales of papers
    – they do bring into the shop lots of home delivery subscription customers, the are almost no additional sales from these visitors
    – the hiatus of the first couple of days is just temporary, life is predictable by day 4/5

These promotions generate focus for the publisher, but for our outlet, the remote chance we might gain a new customer is outweighed by the real chance we will upset an existing customer.

    Hi Ken,
One way would be to get your shop customers to prepay for the whole series and you put is aside before you open each day so they do not miss out. But make sure they pay you in full for the papers and coins for the whole series.

Colin @ 12, I came to the same conclusion some time ago which is why we no longer participate in the various promotions. There is no tangible loss in customers and as you have observed all we avoid are the ones who come from home delivery (which we don’t do) and other newsagencies who have sold out and are iritated and have little to no intention of spending extra money in store. I’ve actually converted two would be coin collectors to a real collectors coin that will actually be worth something in years to come ($5 triangular) rather than this newspaper one which won’t likely have any significant value in future.

Call me a radical but ….

If you have a promotion to sell more papers, a good start would be to supply more papers.

Hate these promotions. On top of the usual suspects who only take the free coins with this promotion there’s the coin collectors who only want the 25c legal tender. These are good customers so I’m loathe to turn them down but it destroys full sets which otherwise could be sold.
Anyway first in best dressed and I’ve given up caring.

I take the contrary view on the free coin. Everyone who bought the Saturday paper was offered the coin, that way they get to decide if they want the set. If they don’t, nothing lost as the coin was free, but what’s the point in returning any of the free ones? May as well try to leverage sales.

David, thats fine if Newscorp allocates extras of the free coins. My allocation is the same for all coins so every time someone takes their free coin I’m left with an incomplete set. After running around in circles last year chasing extra’s for little effect I’m not even trying this year. As I said first in best dress and a care factor of zero.

But Steve, do you ever sell exactly the same Qty of each piece in a set? I don’t. For example, with Dr Seuss I sold out of 2, sold most of the others, but one title sold just over half.

I’m in SA, so can’t speak for where you are, but I always get more of No 1 than the others, eg, this time 100 of #1 and 80 of 2-14. For the last 2 DVD promos, it was 120 #1 and 90 2-14.

With Dr Seuss I got extras of 1 & 2 but my supply is the same for all of the coins. With Dr Seuss after the first 2 books every customer who committed to it took the lot and this is where it going to go pair shaped for me. I’ll end up with customers who want the full set but I’ll be out of the free #1. Still, care factor of zero till the complaining starts, then I’ll just through my hands in the air.
