While revenue for digital access to news sites is only a fraction of what publishers for viable business models, a tweet a few hours ago explains the heart of their challenge.
Why would I pay News Corp or Fairfax or someone else for online news when I can get all the news that I want from the ABC news site (or various other online sites) for free?

The issue is going to be that as time goes on the amount of paid journalism will decrease leaving the consumer relying on unqualified reporting. Advertising will only support the system to an extent, if you want quality you will have to pay for it. As for the ABC, this is government funded. Maybe there is no influence now, but what about the future, I wouldn’t want to rely on it for all of my news as we move into the future.

So much of the ‘News’ reported on the commercial sites is simply rehashed clips from overseas, often days old. How often do we see Youtube clips presented as ‘News’.
Pathetic journalism, and at some stage I’ve told most of the editors that I think.
Ohh yeah, do they care ?
…….Aaahhhh……….Nuh, couldn’t give a rodents rectum.
None of the commercials are any better or worse than the others. Sad indictment I feel.
Other than that, have a Happy Easter everyone 🙂

I believe their main issue that i cannot believe they have not already found out is availability. News is so readily available online from so many different places that finding a reliable source is not hard. Yeah sometimes you have to sort through a lot of biast opinion and utter garbage comments to find good solid news but it is out there for free.
The only other reason to buy subscriptions for news is to actually be fed opinions, from each company you will only get one, this to me is dangerous for the mind. To only hear one side of an argument is a good way to end up on the wrong side of a war.
Forums with open discussions you can participate in regarding events are always available online for free. Opinions are a dime a dozen, just take heed that you know the good from the bad.
