Gotch yesterday sent newsagents Zomlings, a small collectible toy. While the product is interesting, for it to be successful it needs to come to us through a toy wholesaler who understands what is necessary to create a successful collector base. Using the magazine distribution model does not do this. Take a look at Amazon UK to get an understanding of the broader Zomlings range.
The GP we are receiving is inadequate. Average toy GP is 50%. Using Gotch disadvantages us as it denies us best practice GP.
The only reason I can see Gotch being used to scale out this product is because it cost the supplier less than the usual route to market or because they could not engage an existing toy distributor.
I am thinking of sending it back,as i can sell other toys with better margins. you do have a point it needs to come thru proper channel not thru magazines(G&G) with less margins.
My understanding is Zomlings are up to series 5, but Gotch gave us series 1, which was probably old stock purchased cheaply to dump on us. We have never been asked for Zomlings by customers over the 5 series so it’s not popular.
We were sent an email with the option to opt out, which we did. That didn’t help as we still got them. They are already on their way back to Gotch.
The allocations are a disgrace!! We received 300 individual Zomlings (6 boxes), 120 Towers and 48 houses!! The chances of me selling that volume are very, very low!!

FYI, Zomlings are being plugged hard on children’s TV channels on Foxtel. My kids are already asking for them.
