Congratulations to the team at newsXpress Eli Waters in Hervey Bay, Queensland, for selling the sole winning ticket in the $70M Powerball jackpot last night.
this is a good win for a business that represents best-practice transition. while respecting traditional products and services, the business is kicking terrific goals in new product categories and attracting new shopper traffic as a result.
Damn it, that means I didn’t win then

Any agent out there wishing they could sell a big lotto like we just have, please think again.
Starting to wish we’d never sold this ticket.

Interesting comment Allan. We all think of the extra sales, PR etc of selling a big winner but obviously it is not what we think. Care to elaborate on the down sides?

No worries Glenn.
The assumption by a large percentage of the community that I get something for selling the ticket is driving me nuts.
1%, 2%, 5% even as much as 10% is what customers believe I received for selling the winning ticket.
Before I go on let me say that the media hype surrounding the massive US power ball draw just after ours did not help. It was widely reported how much the US agents receive for selling the winning ticket but I really wish that the Aussie media had of said that this is not the case for Aussie agents.
Complete strangers stopping me in the street asking “what are you going to do with your share of the money”…customers who normally never speak to me asking “why are you still working”……..people making comments to others about how lucky I am and now I can retire……it just goes on and on and on.
Others assuming that I get some sort of big pay day bonus from Tatts.
The whole thing is just completely out of hand.
Sure, I smile about it and try to make a joke out of it all but it is getting very tiring.
At 1st I was extremely excited and there was a real buzz about it. Sure we received plenty of free advertising and sure we have seen many new faces in the store but now I am genuinely concerned that this could actually have a detrimental effect on my business. I know from some of my regular customers that other customers see me as not needing their custom because now “he’s a millionaire”.
I could keep going with all the stories but in all honesty Glenn……this is fast becoming a nightmare.

Al, years ago one of our house syndicates won $11M in Powerball. I know what you mean about people and their assumptions. It does die down. We also had to deal with distributing the shares ourselves in those days. $11M through the account.

Hope it does die down soon Mark, Its beyond a joke at the moment.

Put a sign up Allan.
Tell customers exactly how much money you did make on the ticket you sold.

Might have to do that Amanda. What do I do about the people stopping me in the street asking what am i going to do with my share? Complete strangers are stopping me at the bank, post office, shops etc etc.

Get a t-shirt made: I made $2.52 for selling the $70M winning Powerball ticket. I love selling dreams that come true.

The discussion is an interesting one. Do you think Tatts would generate more sales and build a stronger bricks and mortar network by putting terminals in petrol stations, or allocating 0.5% of first division prizes to branded specialist lotto retailers??

I wonder what the punters of Australia would think if a lotto of that magnitude was broken down into, say, 10 first division prizes of $7 million each. $70 million is an offensive amount of money to win, in my humble opinion.

Here’s my suggestion:
Once either Oz or PB get over say $30m and there is no defined winner then it should be re-drawn the next to see if there is a winner. If there is no winner after 3 re draws then let it Jackpot. I totally get that big jackpots are what sells and churns in the profits but it is greed that is driving the sales after a few million.
In my opinion if you “need” $70m you have much larger problems in life. Don’t get me wrong, I love selling into it as much as the next agent however I think the divide between reality and dreams gets ever so much wider with larger jackpots.

I would like to see a new powerball with 100 numbers which jackpot will go to $1 billion dollars

There are a lot of punters out there that will complain about large lotto jackpots, “it’s too much money for one person”, “I hope it gets shared around with lots of winner’s”. Thing is their the same people who would never buy a powerball ticket for $3M only coming on board when it gets over $30M. Try working out the mentality behind that.
