Did you get Coaching Life magazine?

IMG_1325We received Coaching Life magazine, a title we do not expect to sell. because of how the magazine distribution model works we are now a financial backer of this launch issue, investing retail space and labour into the title. We are also a banker in that we will pay for the title at 30 days, return what we don’t sell and, a few months after the title arrived we get our money back. This is why I mean by being a banker – our cash is used to financially support the distribution of the title.

I get that publishers want to launch titles and that the newsagency channel is pretty much the only channel for the launch of niche magazines. Expecting newsagents to invest space, labour and cash without any control over whether we get a new title or the quantity we receive is unreasonable. delayed billing is not the answer.

I want to be paid for the space and time to be invested into a launch. I ought to be compensated if the launch title fails to perform. Otherwise I am encouraged to reduce further my commitment to magazines.

read what I wrote in 2005 and again last year on supply standards as I covered this issue at length.

    Hi Mark,

As a contributing author to the magazine, I valued your perspective on the process behind stocking the magazine in store.

As a change strategist and innovative business award recipient, I echo your comments in your introductory video of August 2015 around doing business differently and adapting.

As authors we’d certainly like to be seen as contributing partners, to growing business, rather than a drain on space, time or revenue.

Based in south east Queensland, I couldn’t find ‘Coaching Life Magazine’ at a local airport stockist in the first week of it’s launch. Rather I found it in country NSW in the far right corner of the store, only after I asked about.

How can people purchase it if they don’t know it’s there?

Here are a couple of strategies to increase sales of any new stock:
    – market to those on home delivery billing
    – use facebook or instagram remarketing to leverage momentum at low cost
    – tweet out your top 5 new magazines of the week / month, taking in store photos with your smart phone an creating a buzz
    – join your local chamber of commerce or BNI and package sales to professional service organisations that are a good fit for your stock / supplies much the same way as florists support jewellery stores with displays etc.

It’s a terrific companion magazine to a range of existing publications in the business, sport and personal development space.

So, Mark have you got your copy of Coaching Life Magazine? You’ll find my article on page 44 🙂

    warm regards

    Tarran, thanks for commenting here.

I have looked at the magazine but not read it as it’s not a magazine I would read in detail.

Many newsagents I know go far further than the marketing tips you suggest. Newsagents with growing businesses are engaged.

The challenges with the title are: I had no say in receiving it, it is in a tiny subject segment, space costs money, with 800 titles in-store newsagents often have no time or financial support to fund doing anything other than putting a product on the shelves.

You say you see yourself as a partner. That’s a lot of partners in a small self-funded newsagency when you consider all magazines.

We have 4 copies, one pocket only (so that’s ok) top pocket between business and sport. Its not in supermarkets, and I wouldn’t say for sure that it won’t sell here so I’m happy to give it a go. Country NSW

Unfortunately when we try to “edit supply” it tells us we are outside our terms of trade.

For me a new Australian magazine is not a problem I’m happy to give it a go, the bigger problem for my business is the weekly dumping of USA magazines to my shop of which I early return approx 80% but they just keep coming like they have for the past 25 years.

I would prefer an opt in for overseas mags, we do need a good selection of OS titles but nowhere near what G&G send us.
After arriving, labelling, topping, removing from shop then scanning these unwanted titles to return I have no spare time or energy left to go onto their site and cancel each title so just stuck on this stupid merry go round which costs a fortune in wages!
