Tough time for Newcastle area newsagents

Media Watch on ABC TV last night detailed the considerable cuts to reporting and editorial services at the Newcastle Herald.

69 full time jobs across the Hunter will go at Fairfax mastheads, 46 of those will be straight from the newsroom. More than half of the cuts will come from the Newcastle Herald, which has already had jobs slashed in recent years.

This story is sure to result in a loss of sales of newspapers in newsagencies in the region. How could it not with fewer resources to produce content readers want to trust.

Faifax profits down by 60% last year.

I recorded Media Watch last night as I went to bed early. I will now definitely watch it.

In areas that have been done of by the New Fairfax System, New Newspapers are starting to appear.

In some current papers the Local Business advertising has walked away from Fairfax.

Circulation is dropping except for New Newspapers.

    Extremely Interesting Times.

Peter the Newcastle Herald has a terrific reputation for good journalism. I know of people in capital cities who would crave for reporting of the quality of the Herald. The gutting of this newsroom is sad to see.

Any loss of the Fairfax investigative nature is a loss for society as a whole. I read the Newcastle Herald for a couple of years in the 80s and thought very well of it.

Couldn’t happen to a better newspaper!

It’s a shame to lose a local newspaper, but this newspaper treats newsagents like rubbish, and has done for over a decade.
