Is News Corp. treating supermarkets differently to newsagents with the Disney promotion?

news-disneyI was sent this photo yesterday of terrific floor display unit promoting the Disney Bring Home Some Magic promotion being run by News Corp. supporting The Daily Telegraph.

This is an excellent display unit. I wonder why Coles gets this and not newsagents.

Most newsagents I have spoken with were given posters, floor decals and blow-up figures – nothing for placing the product on the shop floor.

I expect Coles would have required a unit like this as they would not want to follow the approach newsagents have had to follow for years – carefully managing stock, checking coupons from behind the counter, imposing the rules.

This floor display unit is more space efficient and more effective than the bits and pieces newsagents have been given. It also makes it easier for people to purchase the Disney item without a newspaper – as many newsagents have found already from customers.

It is frustrating to see another example of double standards by a newsagency channel supplier. Such behaviour confuses shoppers and can only leave newsagents wondering why News Corp. is favouring Coles over newsagents.

Next time there is a promotion with a newspaper, I’ll be asking for a floor display unit like this.

As for this promotion, I will be looking at sales tomorrow, for justification of the considerable promotional space allocation.

It doesn’t appear to be all supermarkets. I have been in several this week in two states and not seen it.

News is becoming irrelevant in our business, we still sell papers but I no longer stress about supply or sell outs, it is what they make it

Woolies beside me couldn’t even be bothered displaying them , I have asked staff and they know nothing about it . I know they have them because they received their stock a week before me , I suppose they just put them out the back

Woolies near us did not get sent any, I know because the area rep belatedly called yesterday and asked that I share my stock with Woolies and they would be replaced !

My Coles has the stand and they are selling books out of sequence. I’m done with this.

My woollies have it, they have ALL the stock on display, its a mess and in a poor area, out of sight. News probably paid them a fortune to be so rounded abused.

Just heard one of the dumbest things ever from a customer today , she was surprised that we were selling the Disney promo after just coming from another nearby newsagent and being informed that only his newsagent and woollies and coles are part of the promo . Seriously why on earth would you tell a customer to go to woollies or coles ..If I sell out of something there is no way I would send them to woollies or coles my first response would always be a fellow newsagent

Shaun it’s amazing what some people say to get a sale – not just newsagents. Unfortunately there are gullible people in the world who will believe anything.

As reported in the other post about the Adelaide Advertiser, Newscorp is not only treating Newsagents differently from Supermarkets, but they are also treating separate Newsagencies differently.

We have been asked locally to count and collect the returns of the disney promotion from coles. Obviously it is too much work for the sub contractor that usually does it for them!

Why on earth would you do that Dean?

We just got a fax saying we are expected to collect returns from Woolworths, collate them, process the return for them online, box them up and send them back to Sydney.

Shayne it’s just you have to spend the time for such a slim margin.

Amanda, the local rep here came in and asked rather than demanded, and he is helping me with another promotion, so i am happy to help in this situation. I am looking on the positive side at the moment and hoping the local coles will put everything together, but we will wait and see.

Our Woolies next door has got the little Disney Stand. Yesterday it was empty. The reason it was empty was that it had a big hand written sign stuck on the top. “FREE”. So I am confused about whether they need to do returns. I can’t afford tp give away what I have got left!

Bruce, they may only have had the Frozen CD left. That is the only reason I can think of that it would be a give away.
I know my Woolies were trotting out the Frozen pack throughout the promo and still had plenty in the end. This was despite our rep telling us that the supermarkets were only getting a minimal supply.
