Take the product in the photo – $10 for 12 chocolate roses. It would be hard for any newsagent to beat this, especially if they were to create their own roses by wrapping chocolates themselves.

While newsagents can compete with supermarkets for Valentine’s Day gifts, doing this depends on the product mix and the narrative – like shop local or shop small business – supporting them.
