How one newsagency can drag the whole channel down

namktgSpeaking of stationery, here’s how one newsagent is promoting stationery at the moment. I have suggested it would not be hard to make a more professional sign. They were not interested.

We are only as strong as our worst colleague newsagent.

please do not blame a colleague with handwritten signs. We should appreciate the courage. At least, I don’t know how to configure POS to promote “buy 2 get 1 free” if the items have different price points.

I had visited some best BTS newsagencies in Sdyney this week, and each one has an army of staff to display and refill stock. Each newsagency has one dedicated staff for stock arrival and pricing. They made professional signs and laminated them. That is a commitment of hugh manpower and resource, and they had hugh success as a result.

For an average store, most of us cannot commit that and we have to enjoy what we have.

To help average stores, a free or paid-service should be provided for all newsagencies for for product placement, POS. For example, price for all GNS exerise books, that should be in a editable file in A3 and A4 size.

I visited a Smiggle store and find a uncompleted display stand, on the ground, there is a product placement guide for that stand with planogram.

When we can have a planogram for BTS which is professional developed?

When a newsagent can’t even spell or bother to check spelling of some pretty basic English it sends me a signal that I won’t be shopping there. Bogans.

SUNNY we are very definitely left to our own devices with all our Newsagency lines. My husband is a sign ticker writer from the days when everything was done by hand and he still does out banners etc. but there have been times when we have realised we have a huge big blooper out for all the world to see. Oh well we all have to do our best with what we have. We certainly could not afford to have our big banners at all if we had to pay someone to do them.

Sunny, depending on the software you use – if you did a training video or did an online training workshop or asked for one on one training (all free) you’d soon know how to do it in your software.

the sign is crap and could have been easily replaced with something far better.

Surely every newsagent has to own a computer a printer and software to operate so every newsagent has the tools to at least do a half decent job. You can buy an A4 laminator from GNS for less than 20 bucks so there is no excuss. Teach yourself to do it don’t complain the magic IT fairy hasn’t come around and shown you how.

It all comes back to pride in your business. I wouldn’t stick something like that in my house so why would I put it in my business.
We work hard enough and have enough people competing that we don’t need to bring ourselves down. In my opinion I don’t believe GNS should be responsible, they are just one supplier. If I had an issue with creating signage then I’d be considering a marketing group.

Yes, it’s all about personal responsibility. we as a channel ought to be able to go to this shop and rip down their newsagency sign.

I think Tatts would point to this business as a reason they want to sell through a more structured and consistent channel such as P&C.

So many newsagencies in Sydney look like this, bad signage, messy magazines, poor lighting, dirty fixtures, old paint job, windows covered up. It’s obvious the owners of these shops are happy to have them looking like this and have absolutely no pride in their presentation. With out sounding racist not all cultures are into nicely presented shops, it’s a different way of doing retail business and to some there is nothing wrong with this, it’s what they are used to.

“it’s what they are used to.” This is unfair judgement.

When we walk in a messy colleague store, we want to change everything for them. When we walk in a outstanding colleague store, we want to implement everything they do.

It just come to the investment and returns.

Many shop owners and suppliers told us that they made tiny profit by staying in the business, and made considerable return in property investment. That is why they cannot commit to transform their business. When you talk with the owners, you may find out that someone has nice internet business or develop some townhouses.

Of course, I had visited many small newsagencies and lotto outlets and heard inspiring turnover stories. They concentrated the improvement on main traffic generators. When the main traffic generators bring in more resource, they apply them to other areas.

One lotto outlet owner doubled his lotto sales by creating a professional lotto image, and providing customers with bank industry service standard. On the other hand, he don’t have much resource to work with stationery. That will be left for next stage.

I always asked my staff ‘Would McDonald’s or Myer have a hand written sign like that’. Answer was always no. ‘So why should we?’. They learnt very quickly about professionalism and the way I wanted my business promoted.
