Good to see ANF engaged on supermarket duopoly

It’s been good to see the ANF listed as one of the industry associations supporting the Australian Retailers Association campaign against the fuel discount programs of the Coles and Woolworths supermarket duopoly. It’s good they are holding the new federal government to account for their election promise about the supermarkets.

yes, I was pleased to see the full page ad in the Australian. I’m glad enough newsagents still belong to their associations so we can afford to run such an ad. I notice the Pharmacy Guild did not join in.

If only more would pay up then maybe just maybe there could be more done .

These ads are a waste of money. The campaign while right in its target is poorly constructed. I heard their spokesman on the radio Thursday and he came across as clueless.

This seems like a very strange way to be spending members money. The argument against shopper-docket fuel discounts is one that involves the independent service station operators (and indirectly independent supermarkets).

The ANF is set to achieve little to no ROI for its members even if this particular fight is won. It’s a waste of very limited resources.

The campaign also seems completely out of touch with the current political environment. We just had an election, the current government is severely limiting their media exposure and subsequently these ads place exactly zero pressure on anyone to do anything.

On the ad itself it’s unlikely to be paid much attention by readers. It’s long (too long) and uses seemingly complicated terminology like “cross subsidising”. You will never win a media war with arguments (no matter how valid) that seek to explain complex concepts about monopolies, market power and competition.

If the group that put this campaign together had the resources to put a clear and compelling message, about dismantling the market power of Coles & Woolworths, in front of the electorate over the next 3 years (until another election) then I’d say go for it. Build the pressure strategically over time. However the campaign they’re currently running is too narrow, poorly constructed and will not have the resources to sustain it for 3 years.

The ANF should focus on issues more relevant to its members and worry less about big noting itself by being attached to these kind of campaigns.

Should have been more about abuse of market power in general than fuel shoppa dockets in particular. Target how they screw small business, suppliers and consumers in the long run. Maybe they should focus on how they are the biggest owners of poker machines in Australia, they don’t like that publicised

Rick, you could also add Woolies the largest owner of pubs in Australia and also had an appalling record of assaults in their licenced premises yet the CEO at the time was a devout Christian who spoke of good corporate governance and Christian values. Nothing like a hypercritic when it comes to profit by all means.

Has anybody else notice coles selling 2 mags for $7 (I think they were network ones).
    About 15% discount.
I doubt coles is giving up margin.
I wonder if NANA or our franchises (Newsexpress/newspower) could look into this and get us the same deals.

Steele not sure why you;d want to discount magazines like this. I suspect Coles is compensated at full cover price whereas we would not be.
