Tatts wrong to blame lottery agents for their price increase

The lotto ticket price increase notice sent by Tatts to Golden Casket newsagents in Queensland for display to customers advises that the price increase is due to increased commission to retailers.

It’s not just Golden Casket agents who benefit from then increased commission. Tatts themselves benefit since they charge commission on tickets purchased online.

The Tatts communication should outline the costs of being an agent including the capital costs for the new fit out, training requirements, infrastructure costs, insurance and other costs. The commission increase in Queensland barely costs some of these costs faces by agents. But the Tatts notice does not explain this.

This notice reads as passive aggressive to me.

A supplier in respectful partnership would have created a more thoughtful document, one that did not finger the retailers the way Tatts does. They would have also not pushed interested people online – as the flyer does in two places.

The Tatts notice points shoppers to goldencasket.com for more information. The information is not easy to find.

as soon as I read that notice I was having second thoughts about displaying it at all, I think I will just tell my staff and customers the price rise is all out Tatts bottom line and nothing to do with us.

Tatts should view the commission increase as a normal cost of doing business, not a reason to pass the blame along to their valued partners the franchisees. It is well overdue anyway.

Why put the sign up? We all talk to our customers and can explain the reason that commissions have increased without finger pointing if necessary. Last price change did not cause any angst as long as all the correct price cards are up. Customers read the screen or look at the price card in most cases. Will there be a sign for Tobacco price rises?

All Tatts Golden Casket have done is insult the very people who earn them their very profitable living. Makes one wonder what they think about the punter who buys their lotto tickets. It is a discretionary choice however, pity Golden Casket don’t realise this fact.

Did anyone receive notification from Golden Casket that the new pricing structure started today? I find it difficult that a regual OZ lotto quickpick costs $14 yesterday and $14.40 today. Noth tickets it the same draw

From the Tatts golden casket website re the price changes.

“Golden Casket is introducing a flat rate commission for its retailers on the sale of Golden Casket products which will result in some small price increases and decreases.”

This wording is much more appropriate the sign we have been asked to display and cant find!!!

just on a side issue, what is a UPC-A variable price barcode prefix and how easy is it to set up to read the new barcodes being proposed for lotto tickets?

Rick it needs a software change – if only Tatts had told the software companies in time.

Rick, its the same kind of barcode typically used for weighed products. It incorporates the price of the product into the barcode.

Starting at the 3rd number there is a 4 digit product code and starting at the 8th number there is a 5 digit price.
