Magazine distributor Network Services has announced today it is moving to a Monday / Thursday magazine delivery roster.
This not unexpected move will alter workflow and shopper traffic in newsagencies. I can think of plenty of Take 5 shoppers who will be disappointed. You only need to look at the seven day sales decay curve to see the impact.
I do wonder if this is part of a broader move around other changes – time will tell.
Unless Gotch also move to the same delivery schedule, newsagents will be stuck with handling magazines 4 days each week. For many that will be a significant hurdle in an already challenged category.

Notification from Gotch just came through. Same as Network.

just received both emails for the start date of the 15th july
For my business this should be a good move we have the local paper that comes out Wednesday so trade should stay the same and thursday with fresh magazines coming in should make it busy for that day as well . Only thing that we will have to look at is staff if the trade ends up being split over the two days we might have to cut back staff which is always a good thing

Gotch has also sent a email.
Confirming that they are moving to 2 days delivery also

Bit of a shame, Wednesday is only really busy because of magazines, Thursday is busy because it’s pension day and powerball. However it will make Friday, which is always busy, an easier day for staff. Start thinking new roster.

NDC the nanny company. Telling us how to suck eggs.
Another down side, 1 more day to send us more weeklies on SBR that turn up JTL – just too late, and not required.

Funnily enough, my Big Leagues – which are supposed to be delivered on Thursdays – have (coincidentally) not been arriving (i.e. missing every single week) since I handed back my delivery run (there is a link there, I’m sure). I did, however, receive some copies of the SOR special. They haven’t sold. But my point is, Thursday delivery so far not great.

Hi Wendy, I would ask your newspaper distribution agent if they are receiving them. This happened to us and we found out that Gotch were delivering them on Thursday to our distribution agent. They should redeliver them to you and not invoice you as the mags are yours (assuming you still have the direct relationship with Gotch).

I had the same thing happen with Big League when we gave up our run.
I spoke to GG and they changed the delivery day to friday, so it came with the normal friday delivery of mags.
Of course, this took 2 weeks for GG to organise on their computer system after the request from us, and we don’t have many fridays of deliveries left due to the changes.
At least we will be eventually be getting Big League on thursdays again though.

Wendy, we are a distributor, Big League comes on the newspaper truck. Our supply comes to our warehouse with all the newspapers but the other newsagents get theirs dropped at their newsagencies by the truck driver.
Big League is GG and has nothing to do with newspaper supplier.

Big League is definitely a Gotch anomaly. The publishers must have big sway to get delivery via the newspaper trucks on a Thursday

I always thought it might have just been the drivers pulling favours but not when it seems to be all over the place
