nourish is another magazine launch we have to make space for. This one is challenging since it looks like a guys magazine aimed at the fitness section but it could also fit in general health as well as food.
We have it with men’s health and fitness titles. I’d love to know where others have it.
Notice the card sticking out of the magazine – the nourish publisher is taking space from titles behind it in a move sure to upset the affected publishers.
I’ve been away from my shop most of this week so haven’t been involved in the magazines at all.
I went to food section to grab Delicious and found Nourish there, which I didn’t think was the best placement.
I think Peter Evans on the cover, meal planner and 40 recipes all screamed food section to who ever placed the magazine in that section. We need to open the cover and see what’s inside, however Wednesday is our horror magazine day so no one takes time to browse.
I moved this magazine to front of shop above weeklies and to health section. Will probably keep it placed with Women’s Health and Clean Living rather than Men’s Health as we are selling more and more magazines in this area.

Without even reading it i went into auto mode and put it straight into sports mags because that is what the front page looked like , but then later in the day i realised it was some sort of cooking magazine so i moved it . . i do not see it working just based on that alone ,the cover is what grabs readers attention and this one gives out mixed messages . If we as a reatailer have to question where to place a magazine then the mag itself is just not doing its job

Shauns, I left some in cooking section also but I just don’t think it will sell as well there.
Like you say the cover is what grabs people’s attention, so with Pete on the cover it might sell well with the gossip mags.
Publishers often send us info on placement for new magazines and this does help.

Why assume this is for males? Pete Evans is a hit with the ladies and will cause an instant reaction with them to look at it. I cant imagine a heading “TV’s Hottest Chef” being targeted at males… I have it in the premium women’s section and in food. Lets see in a week whether i am right or the one with egg (scrambled) on my face!

Chris, my motives for this and similar posts is to let publishers know that a cover of itself does not help with placement and to let newsagents know that some titles require time investment for us to decide where in our shop a title should be placed.

So no one reads their labels telling them it goes in 1508. We have located it also in food and weeklies.

The magazine label has the MPA code and Bill is right – it’s a good guide.

In 6 years this is the first I have ever known about any code on the label, see how lazy I have been since having stickers to go on mags . The only part I look at is how many bulks there should be for weekly mags that I do not sticker but I will be having a look at these for now on .

It is good to note that (sometimes) we get to choose what we want and how many. Network sent an email regarding
their new PEARS magazine and asked us
to follow the link and change the allocation if we so desired.
I have done it a few times now and I really appreciate having some input into how many of ANY magazine I should get.
Thanks Network – I don’t praise you very often but this is a SIGNIFICANT change in
your modus operandi and newsagents appreciate being included in the decision making.

I’m another old newsagent who didn’t know about this MPA code on the labels. This will keep me busy tomorrow checking my labels. How are these numbers set up by Tower? How do they work?
Anyway i’ve read the magazine today and have to ask do we really need this, it’s content can be found in a variety of magazines already. If we get a new magazine to put on our already crowded shelves we really do need something totally different from the rest.

Cancel my “feelgood” words from the above.
Just bringing in labels for next week and noticed partworks Rocks, gems and Minerals is coming in again.
Two years ago I got 24 of No 1 AND HAD RETURNS so this time I am getting 48 (double the amount for my now halfsize shop).
This is rampant with part series – HOW MANY CAN YOU POSSIBLY RE-SEND.
It makes me so angry because I send my edi data through daily and Network you know that I only had 1 of these every week and returned it every week because you wouldn’t cancel it.
You are simply using us as a cash cow and that cannot continue unless you actually don’t want us anymore.
More and more of us are considering our magazine titles (I have culled from 1900 to 700 and might do more)
WHY DIDN’T YOU ASK ME FIRST?????????

MPA codes are ideal for when you have new staff. When you get the question “where does this one go” we reply with “well lets start with the code and go from there”. Not always the right spot but it is a start.

Jenny the numbers are determined by publishers / distributors and fed in the invoice file to all software packages used by newsagents.

June after an average sale of just 1 the wise people at NDC are sending me 24 and at $1.95 they are not worth sending back so it is a win win for them oh well my kids will love them for sure . I should also winge about the fact it took them 23 issues last time round to give me a back order for #4

June that’s funny, 15 minutes in your good books!
I got the same email to set supply, but do we really need 60 recipes for pears?
I love cooking magazines, if I could only ever have one magazine it would be a cooking one, but how many more food magazines do we need.
Quality, not quantity is what newsagents need on their shelves.

We received a lot of copies of this title so it is placed in the food section, men’s fitness and also women’s fitness. A lot of copies will be returned in a week and a bit if it is not selling.
