Penalty rates (especially PH rates) hurt the community. Take our store today as an example…..Saturday is by far our best day of the week. We would normally have employed 2 senior staff of about 4-5 hours each and 2 to 3 junior staff of 4-5 hours each but we have only used 3 junior staff for a total of 10 hours in total. The senior staff have missed out on a days wages to which they would probably have spent in thier local community. Times this by all the small business in your location doing exactly the same thing and the local economy starts to feel the hurt. Penalty rates are not only hurtful of local economies but are very much antiquated and really do need a Govt. with a set to do something about it.

According to o fair work australia, employees were not granted public holiday rates for saturday for some industries. Is this the same for newsagencys and if not then why the double standard?

I didn’t even realise that Easter Saturday is a public holiday, we traded as per usual. Closed Friday and Sunday and work Monday without any staff.
