Boxwrap took to Twitter today to announce a deal to sell their Boxwrap cigarette packet covers through Newspower newsagencies. To me, it’s an odd move since sales data is showing no upside for tobacco products. More newsagents are getting out of the category.
good move if you ask me , i have seen a lot of smokers walking around with the plastic housings for their smoke packets so there is definantly a market for them . I got out of cigarettes when the packaging changed but i wonder if over all it has made any difference to the amount of smokers .

Hasn’t made a difference to our sales as we are qty level with last year. The covers do sell well as most people are buying them not so much to cover the warnings, but when they go to the pub or clubs they know which packet is theirs.

I don’t think Mark was commenting on the product itself. I have no doubt it sells. I think the point was that the cigarette category is declining significantly in newsagencies. There are stores across all retail segments getting out of cigarettes, resulting in a consolidation of sales for remaining stores.
It appears strange that a group would do a deal for a this product when the clear trend is for stores to be exiting the category.

Not all stores, smart retailers are making money while we can. newspapers are in decline so are mags but you can still make money until they go. Add ons like these are seeing us build our baskets as Mark tells us we should and since we are nowq the only retailer within walking distance to sell cigs we are making good money.
Good work by newspower to help its members.

I wish newspower would get more deals for gifts. I’d make more money off that than this cancer stick deal.

As a member Helen you can talk to your group about gift deals that suit you. I think all groups are heading in the right direction on deals for members.

Need to remember that not one size fits all…. We still do very well out of cigarettes and these wrappers, along with cigarette cases are purely add on sales. We will take the sale while we can

Does anyone have any experience with E-Cigarettes (aka nicotine vapours). We’d like to know which brands are popular, who the wholesalers are, what margins are like, customer response, related paraphernalia, etc ?
We don’t do tobacco presently but this could be an emerging trend that we can get on to.
