I like this tongue-in-cheek TV commercial produced to promote Disk Smith Foods. According to Crikey, the Advertising Board won’t allow TV networks won’t play it.
I like how he’s having a go and wearing his support for Australia on his sleeve.

Mark – according to today’s SMH, the advert hasn’t been banned – just given a PG rating, which means that it can’t be shown during ad breaks in the 6pm news. It can only be shown later in the evening.

Correct Megan, i like the ad and cannot see a problem with it. After some of graphic footage we see on the news maybe the news should be rated PG. Another thing that i cannot understand is the amount of ads for gambling and what ever sport you watch there is a commentator giving betting odds, how does this get through the media authorities?

So are we to forget that Dick made his money on cheap china imports of electronics that destroyed the local manufacturers then sold out to woolies, the very people he is having a go at. But hey as they are saying they love Dick.

Pardon my ignorance Luke, did Australia have an electronics manufacturing industry at some stage? (not having a go mate, this is a serious question).

That would have to put a smile on most fair dinkum faces. Loved it. Thanks for taking the time to put it up Mark.
Al, not sure what to make of it, or how accurate it is, but this website says we still have 427 Electronics Manufacturers in Australia.

Not sure how many we had before the Dick purported/supposed impact took place.
Must be one of those had the Richard effects………..

Luke, I was into electronics way too many years ago and he made the hobby affordable for many and he created jobs for lost of people in his shops. I don’t begrudge him a pay day in selling the business.
I respect and appreciate his investments in Australia and its products in the years since. Dick is good for Australia.

I dare say Dick may have had more success with his food brand if he had distanced it from the very bland “buy Australian” theme and just built it around the play on words.

Australia had a vibrant electronics industry remember AWA, made tv’s stereos etc only to dissappear from the market, now relaunched out of china.
Remember Dick Smith delivery trucks with a big picture of a very nerdy Dick Smith with the slogan THE ELECTRONIC DICK. Are such memories

But Mark, Coles is making that same argument to justify its $1 milk and bread and its homebrand range undercutting competitors. They claim it is all to make things more affordable for average shoppers. Long term it kills local business. A week after selling out he was on the attack against the very people he sold out to, a bit rich for me, but you do not need to share my opinion as I do not have to share yours.

Yer Al, we did at one stage, before it was just chaeper to import stuff, Australia used to make stuff. We used to be up there with world leaders until price became the only selling point, people used to shop on quality and service . Not just TV etc I’m talking all the parts, batteries, etc. But if Dick is making money good luck to him, god bless Dick

If I was rich (and pigs might fly) I would
love to be entrepreneurial and philanthropic like Dick.
I love Dick too.
