Poor supermarket compliance

I was in two Woolworths supermarkets yesterday and each had stands from ACP for promoting ACP magazines half filled with titles from other publishers. I have has suppliers say compliance is easier in supermarkets. Not from what I saw on the weekend. ACP would be more frustrated in that they probably paid Woolworths for the floor display unit space.

I dont understand why they are given magazines at all by their attitude towards them.

My local Coles & Woolies clearly find magazines a chore – as they never have mags out on the day released. On occasion their stands still have last months mags.

Just last week I witnessed a customer ask for the womans day & new idea. They were still out on the dock! – and it was 4 pm in the afternoon!

I was livid. I cannot get extra stock when we have sold out / or product arrives wet (as in this morn) – as the supplier is out of stock. However, there are mountains of stock clearly sitting out on the dock of
some of these chains could be reallocated to dedicated newsagents – who are doing the right thing – putting up posters – promotions etc.

Is it just me – or is the distribution models the sole problem for the decline
    in some magazines sales?

I am certain that the algorithms guiding newsagent supply hand supermarket supply differ and we suffer as a result.

I LOVE IT when the supermarket in our centre puts it’s magazines out late. We have great sales and the opportunity to win customers over to us permanently. That said, why do they get looked after so weel by the distributors, papers and mags, when they treat these categories as second class and with mags only pick the eyes out of the range.

    I am with you Brendan.
I get the posters up before daylight, and put some thought into location of particular mag issues with co-locations etc. While it is galling to see Woollies treat the mags with some disdain, it is also great every now and then when they forget to put them up for half a day!
I treat it as a challenge to make sure we are well ahead of them with mags – always.

Bruce and Brendan – that is exactly my point!

I love it that just moments ago, there is absolutely no sign of the weeklies in our local Coles! I have nearly sold out – due to the lovely wet reading weather.

However, I cant reorder as there isnt any stock left!

It is unfair to the publishers as well, who are given distribution figures not sell through figures.

Call Network and ask the question. There is often floor stock – they just have to hunt it down.

I was in a Nursing Home yesterday Mark, and like you, could only find skeleton staff.
    Can’t imagine why LOL.
Small businesses like newsagents who are family owned are the only people left who can work through long weekends, and our service can be appreciated. I was away with family and poor hubby was RUN OFF HIS FEET on Sunday and Monday mornings – and the June holiday weekend is our quietest (which is why I sneaked away…..) oh well, never again!

Very expensive to employ staff on weekends. And getting dearer after July 1st. Does anyone know if Tony Abbott has any promises to fix this problem for small business? The Howard govt may have gone a bit too far the other way but This Labour govt is pro worker just a bit too much.
