While satellite navigation devices are ubiquitous, there is still a marketplace for street directories, especially at this time of the year as Father’s Day gifts. The team at one of my stores has put together this excellent display promoting the Melways Street Directory.
While sales of printed street directories are not what they were a few years ago, they do warrant promotion – there is a noticeable sales lift as a result of the attention we give the product. Also, there appears to be fewer retailers stocking street directories now so the competition on price is less.
We are not promoting any special deals, just promoting the product to leverage seasonal interest around Father’s Day.
Whyyyyyyy????
Everyone knows men (dads) don’t need directions!
LOL Nice promo, BTW 🙂

We do quite well out of maps and street directories. Prob. because the GPS units are not too crash hot on country roads. Besides, there are people like me out there that actually just like maps…

It’s easier to plan a trip with a map. A gps is good for “Just get me there, I don’t have a clue”. Still a place for both at present.

I think we as map sellers should spread the word on how use-less gps units are.
people leave them on the dash, or just the bracket or even the suction cup mark on the window is crying out for someone to break in.
people driving on the highway and in particularly at night when they have them in their field of view with a big arrow saying go straight for the next 800kms to melbourne….
they are no good in the country
they are a distraction whilst driving like mobile phones.
printed maps are better because pirates have been using them for centuries to hide their treasure.

lol peter. We also do well with maps, and directories having our travel magazines alongside them helps too. At the moment there are camping/4WD mags with Simpson Desert and Cape York on them, make a nice display in the map stand and remind people we carry maps. Anything with Europe seems to be doing well at the moment also
