Frustrating sell out of newspapers by 12 noon

We were sold put of the Herald Sun by noon yesterday.  We chased more stock and our distribution newsagent said they could not get stock.  We bought up copies from Coles and they only lasted a few minutes.  Based on customer queries we could have sold at least double the usual number of copies of the Herald Sun.  By not long after noon at our centre every retail location was out of the Herald Sun.

We sold out of The Saturday Age by around 1:30.  The same deal.  No stock.

I am surprised that Fairfax and News did not see this coming given the extraordinary interest in the royal wedding.  But maybe they did – they make most of their money from advertising. Printing and distributing extra stock costs money.  We only make money from sales, extra stock is essential to us.

Very frustrating.

NWN chose this weekend to cut back our supply of Daily Tele. Sold out by 10:30.

Sold out of CMs here in Brisbane by 11:30 yesterday and could get no addittional stock. The worse bit was I’d increased my numbers online during the week expecting there to be demand (first sale of the day was 5 CM & 5 AUS to one customer wanting wedding coverage pictures!) only to have the numbers ammended and cut back.Very frustrating !

Whoever is in charge of circulation at news and fairfax should be demoted. What a missed opportunity.

Paul S, We recieved a email from CM saying to maximise sales due to the wedding they were increasing supplies!! They must have missed us as no increase on supply as well and we sold out early.

I tried to order extras yesterday at 9am with HWT, and they had already run out. Some of our sub-agents ran out by lunchtime.

Considering how late we received the papers, some sub-agents not getting their papers until about 9am, yesterday was an absolute disaster costing at least 500 paper sales in our territory.

Would it be cynical to suggest that there were plenty of freebie copies to hand out at the footy ?
Nah, that’s just a silly thing to suggest Lance.

Hee Lance.. The GCB (sorry a bit off topic here) is apparently doing free papers at the airport again. How do we know? Regulars are telling us they’ve already got their free GCBs from there and just buying other titles from us.
    Nice going, News.

I increased my order knowing that it would be a big day so I wasn’t too bad. Did others not get what they ordered? Being cut back for such a story makes no sense.

Both of the HWT promotions for the Royal Wedding have been great for us. The medallions were a great sales aid and the Magazine on Monday generated enough traffic to give us our best Monday trading since the Grand Final- and thats across the board; mags, cards, sweets etc. Just a ripper day in paradise. We have been in Royal Wedding mode for a couple of weeks and we increased our retail requirements by 25 % which was just enough to get us through.

Magazine sales have also been outstanding. Fortunately we totally disregarded the information from Network regarding Sunday delivery and just ran hard with what arrived, when it arrived. Network clearly could not organize a booze up in brewery. All they know how to do, is to bully people into not being 53 seconds late with payments. Just a bunch of losers….really !

Hi I have a question I hope you can answer. I have a small business and am a sub-newsagent. My newsagent I get my stock from is a pretty average bloke and to be honest, I am far from happy with my service from him. We don’t get the paper numbers we ask for, we don’t get the magazines we ask for, he is a highly rude individual and frankly I am not a fan when it comes to dealing with him.

My question is this: Why am I forced to deal with him? The fact that the location of me on a map dictates who I have to use is incredibly frustrating, especially as this would be one of the only remaining territories where monopolies still exist.

I simply don’t see how this is good business sense not only for me but also the publishers that he represents, I end up with frustrated, un-provided for customers, along with getting pretty hot under the collar myself in sheer frustration!

I have another lovely newsagent I would be delighted to deal with, but due to my location on one side of a road, and not the other, he is not permitted to deal with me, how can this be tolerated?
