I was fortunate to receive a preview copy of UFC magazine last week and have a good look through the launch issue. UFC will have a broader appeal than I suspect many newsagents would think. While the logical place for the title will be with sports magazines, I think it would also perform well in good impulse locations where it will be seen by a broader cross-section of shoppers. we plan to co-locate the title: next to our top selling newspaper for a few days and then as the Magazine of the Week at the sales counter. This is in addition to high profile launch activity with an aisle end display facing into the dance floor. We will be offering one lucky customer a gift pack of UFC merchandise.
Any magazine launch is welcome. The launch of UFC magazine is especially welcome given the extraordinary interest in the UFC franchise here and the planned spend by ACP in promoting the title.
I have enough UFC mags to supply the whole town with one each just about . I will definantly give it a go ,it has up untill the 28th to show some kind of performance .
i normally sell only a couple of sport magazines a week or an issue so o do not have many . give you an example i opnly sell one of each boxing magazine so i don’t know how this will go for me

Shaun, Don;t just treat it as a sports magazine. Put it next to newspapers, on the counter or maybe even with your weeklies for a few days. 25% of ticket transactions to the first UFC event in Australia last year were done by women.

We were very excited about the release of this magazine and were geared up for a big debut however we only recieved 16 copies. We recieved more point of sale than we did magazines! Have ordered more today in good faith this mag is going to be a hit.

Great for sales
Shame about the subject matter, you’d hope at some stage human beings would evolve above this rubbish.

I dont get it, have I missed something, Violence in any shape or form cannot be condoned and here we are promoting this rubbish, I have 116 copies if anyone wants them. When I read a quote such as on page 56 “even when I take people to the ground, I want to hit my opponent, hurt him, and be aggressive. Thats my style”, I shudder with disbelief.

Rob, do you also not sell girly mags, smokes, shooting mags etc?

From what I’ve heard this magazine outsells Men’s Health in the US, which is impressive. The growth potential seems enormous. And as Mark has said, it’s a lot more than just a magazine focussed on violence.

I agree with Rob.If this is a growing category, a highlight amongst a fragile state for magazines, then that is sad for our society.

Rubbish. Stop talking about that which you have no clue. The UFC doesn’t promote violence outside the ring (or in this case the Octagon). Mixed Martial Arts teaches respect, discipline and the value of hard work.

Hi Pete, yes I can see your point, but give it some serious thought, unless its all a fake like wrestling I dont want anything to do with it.

Rubbish ! sounds like you want to fight, of course they would not condone violence outside the ring, what do you take us for idiots!

Let me explain, we live in a beautiful part of this country which is being destroyed by alcohol and violence, (see the 2 page article in the weekend aust)the town has reached a new low point, what we dont need right now is a big launch of a new mag all about men fighting each other in an “octagon”, so when I see 116 copies delivered to me this morning I have to ask the question “is this what this town needs right now?”

You should be a politician, Rob. You certainly know how to cover for your own ignorance by clouding the issues.
1. Just because someone disagrees with you and calls you out for being ignorant, that does not mean they “want to fight”.
2. When you say “what do you take us for idiots!” Who do you mean by “us”? I only implied that you were an idiot.
3. When you mention “alcohol and violence”, just what are you saying the magazine has got to do with alcohol? I bought a copy today and there is not one mention of alcohol anywhere. No recipies for cocktails, as you might find in men’s titles like Zoo and FHM. Not even a single alcohol related ad (how many magazines that are aimed at adults can you say that about?). If you don’t want to promote alcohol and violence then don’t stock any AFL or Rugby League magazines either, as these sports are constantly in the headlines for player inescrections.
4. Not only does the UFC magazine have nothing to do with alcohol, it’s not, as you wrongly say “all about men fighting each other.” In fact, half of it seems to be about nutrition and fitness. You choose to highlight the line about “even when I take people to the ground, I want to hit my opponent, hurt him…” What about the stuff about eating healthy to live longer? Or about realising your full potential as an athlete? Again, you’ve clouded the issue to suit your own argument.
5. As Peter points out, you should get rid of your ciggies, girlie mags, Guns N Ammo and anything else that supports the downfall of society (as you see it from up on your almighty high horse).
6. I have no idea what “town” you are referring to, but alcohol and violence have been around longer than the UFC has. If you want to try and blame society’s ills on the launch of a new magazine then by all means, go for it, just don’t get on the internet spouting your ill-informed opinions for others to suffer.
7. MMA is widely regarded as the fastest growing sport in the world. Acer Arena sold out in record time for the fights this weekend, and last year when the UFC was in Australia they broke the record for most merchandise sold in a single night at Acer. If you choose to ignore that market then that’s your own business. Obviously you are not feeling the pinch as much as a lot of other magazine retailers right now. Good luck to you.
