We had a terrific day of trade yesterday for the start of the Boxing Day Sales. Christmas products were the hit – Boxed and single cards and Christmas decorations sold like hot cakes. Much of the product sold had been sourced especially for the event – our margin was excellent. $3,000 in boxed cards alone in one store is a terrific result.
There was also nice business in calendars, stationery and general gifts. Not so much for magazines and newspapers but I can’t complain as they have had a brilliant seven days.
I think everyone flocks to the larger centres on Boxing Day. We had average Sunday figures and were one of the few shops in the centre to open. It was however an opportunity for us to tidy up and prepare for a more extended clearance sale. We will run this until early January when back to school grows some legs. I imagine that strip shops would have been even quieter in the metro area.

Eric, that certainly solves the do I or don’t I open debate.

Seems that a newsagency in a big mall is a totally different business to a stand alone, or a newsagency in a strip centre.
I am in a strip, and our boxing day (Sunday) was the same figures as a normal Sunday.

last year, the week between christmas and new year was dead quiet. This year, we have seen unbelievable sales in all categories. I have not seen Lotto sales like these since the 90 million Oz lotto draw.
Hopefully an indication of next year.
