Christmas is an excellent season to have the Darrell Lea range as it brings in infrequent visitors looking to stock up on their Darrell Lea fix. While we see good impulse business from regular shoppers, it is those who visit seeking out Darrell Lea product because they know we carry this brand who interest me. Given that pretty much everything else we sell is available in other stores in a shopping centre, the Darrell Lea control of retail outlets is welcome – especially this time of the year.
I was watching television the other night and up came an ad from Woolworths, saying that they now have Darrell Lea products in stock. This was in Queensland. Not sure about other States. You may want to look into it Mark.
Not fair for Newsagents carrying the product.
Tracey i hope that is not right.
I’m sure the day is coming that we will walk into coles/woolies and see half an isle of ink and toner staring back at us.
Unfortunately this is true. Darrell Lea is now available in Woolworths.
In QLD they have just gone into a number of IGA’s (60+ we know of owned by the 1 guy)… Makes it hard when we have supported them, put up with the high maintenance it entails and then to be told that hey the supermarket directly opposite you is also going to have them, but dont worry it wont impact you at all…
We are close to saying f. u. and take out and put more gifts in. I can guarantee we will make more off the space than with Darrell Lea, with far less effort… However, it will mean dropping a product line…
Hopefully IGA will realise the return does not warrant the effort (unless they will get something special like with mags)…
I cant believe Darrell Lea would cheapen their brand by going into supermarkets. Will be interesting to see if “The Big Boys” manage the brand as well as individual retailers do. A big mistake for such an iconic brand, but that is just my opinion.
Woolies and Coles bought out pubs to get hold of Liquor, maybe Newsagents could be next so they can get their big mits on Lotto as well. Maybe THAT will be OUR big payday??????
Me thinks that they will get it anyway without paying. Don’t be surprised.
Do you trust the guys at Lotto etc to do the right thing by Newsagents????
if newsagents think they are still a protected species then a rude shock awaitens. If NZ can sell lotto from service stations do you really believe that Tatts Lotto here will not want to spread its exposure as part of its business plan.
There will be no point of difference in a newsagency as there is now no point of difference in a convenience store
We have to Max….its our only point of difference at the moment.
Oh please… there are three 7-11s and a BP servo selling Tattslotto within 1km of this place (Melbourne) and every ad I hear ends with “buy in store or online”….
Darrell Lea can put their product where they like, it’s their brand after all. They need to make decisions which suit their business just as we do. That said, there should not be a different set of rules for independent retailers versus national stores in terms of fixtures since DL has made it a mission that they want their brand respected in a very specific way.
