Is it just me or has the gloss faded on AFL footy cards (all sets – the various stand alone packs as well as the packs tied to the Herald Sun) this year? Sales are down not only in my stores but in several others I have spoken with. I’d be interested in knowing how they are performing elsewhere. It could be that I am seeing a slower start to the card season.
G`day Mark,
our store has battled to even get the cards in the past but last year went pretty well for us so this year was expecting them to do well again but….now there is not only cards but tags and chipz…poor kids dont know which ones to choose. I expect the kids will decide this in variuos school yards across the country but i think it has had a detrimental impact on what would normally be a good item to stock.

What about the totally unsolicited extras sent last week of footy cards (whether you need them or not). We are also noticing that the parents are saying No this year because they know how much they spent on them last year.

Mark, we are seeing a very soft year for them this year.infact there has a drop in the last two years. I remember back 5 years we wouldve been going through a couple of boxes a day but this year i think we have only been through 5 boxes thus far.
PARTY ANIMALS are our kids thing at the moment, cant keep up with them.

Nrl card sales over 3 years have been excellent for me but this year they have died off big time i have so much stock because of last years sales but this year i am thinking of sending some back . it might have a bit to do with the tags this year . to many choices and to much stock to carry , and soon the QLD newspapers will be doing the footy cards again

I think one of the reason because there are more ways to get the footy card rather than buying in newsagency.

It’s certainly a surprise with the HWT cards as they have engaged in a much wider advertising campaign this season too! Maybe it will pick up after the big round of matches in AFL and ongoing controversy in the NRL this week.

We found the same thing with NRL cards – sales are certainly down on last year. We did exect this though with massive success the last few years (well over $20K per season in cards and abums) the trend had to slump at some point. We have managed to counterect this over the last week though by giving our closest local primary school number of the NRL cards to give away. We done it as part of a sponsership for a playground program they were running for year 6 kids but for other stores I would see the opportunity to give your local school a bundle of unopened cards (say 1 card for each student) as something they can use to reward kids. Using this strategy to ‘jumpstart’ the trend has certainly helped stimulate our sales again.
On another note we’ve found that Mighty Beanz have been far more popular than the Party Animals in our area. Three boxes in three days.

Found this site through a google search, and just wanted to give some advice from a collector’s perspective on this topic..
Series 1 (The silver packs this year) are kid’s products and are obviously affordable at $2.95 per pack, but for the serious collector (people that i know spend thousands of dollars on AFL cards) don’t want these, because they are cheap and not worth anything in the long run.
Series 2 this year (can be ordered through JHL like Series 1) are more expensive at $5 per pack but serious collectors (who spend thousands on cards) will pay that amount as the cards are worth more in the future (these cards inc. Signatures etc) and i can promise you now that this product will sell and it will sell fast so left over stock won’t be an issue..
If you want to ask questions post them here and i will check back frequently..
Thanks.
