NSW newsagents win home delivey fee increase

NSW newsagents have been granted an increase by News Ltd’s Nationwide News of 4 cents a day for delivering newspapers over two or more days a week.  A delivery only on one day a week to an address does not attract any increase.  A seven day delivery achieves a 25% increase in the delivery fee.

The new fees take effect from April 12 and are being announced to newsagents today.

Long overdue, and not even close to being enough to turn our run into a break even situation but very welcome news just the same.

Despite the increase, our delivery fees are still less than Vic, cover price of the Daily Tele is less than the Herald Sun, we receive no compensation when the papers are late as in Vic, and we are not allowed to charge a monthly statement fee. How can the same publisher impose such inequities from one state to another?

I just got the Victoria fax – 20% increase in home delivery fee or $0.19 increase for a 7 day a week account.

We can also charge $0.55 for statements that are sent in the mail.

The late fee is also being modified to reflect $15 for every 100 home deliveries plus $15.

These delivery fee increases are rubbish and the system is unnecessarily complicated. How about a flat $2 per customer per week, whether they get one paper a week, or seventeen and three magazines? Incorporates statement fees and mucking around. Encourages customers to order more papers, not just the once a week for the tv guide. Very easy to explain.

Newsagents need to make money out of home delivery, not just cover costs.

what if they spot audited 20 delivery agents in each state to work out how much it actually costs to deliver a paper.

oh… they wont do that because they dont want to know.

It really isn’t worth the crapload of paperwork / admin for each delivery customer! That won’t even cover the cost of adjusting everyone’s accounts.

Oh well – at least it beats the mountain of paperwork required for adjusting accounts for time away/holidays that we do for free :-/

While I sold my run a few years ago, if I had it today I’d at least be grateful for something. It is better than nothing. I’d also focus as much as possible on parts of my business over which I have more control.

    Mark,

Well put… A little bit of something is better than a lot of nothing… Am overseas at present has there been any movement in QLD on the deliver matter, or like everything news does (including freebies) are we the last in line and will end up with a little be less of the something…

    Cheers

This is probably irrelevant, and I know Mark has posted about it before, but what about the deal that uni students get. $20 for 52 weeks, including weekend delivery.

If i read the paper more i’d probably sign up for it.
