The folks at The Age have deemed the HSBC Hot Summer sale to be more important than the lead news story in the newspaper today. Browsers are expected to pick up the newspaper based on the ad and not the lead story.
I feel for the editorial team who put in the hours on the lead story of the day. Being trumped for a buck would hurt.
Exactly the same has been done on the front page of the Sydney Morning Herald, Mark. Appalling.

Mark,
For a long time now this form of advertising (sticker on the front page)has apparantly anoyed you, as you frequently mention it as poor taste in advertising. I believe it really is a situation between Newspaper proprietor, advertiser and reader and certainly not one for the distributor or reseller. They seem to repeat the process often and have done so for years so all must be okay with them on this ongoing saga Seems that nobody else is out of step with this.

Graeme there are plenty of people unhappy with this including many within Fairfax. As I have noted in my posts on this topic in the past, I write as a consumer.

mark,
Fair comment. As a consumer it doesn’t bother me one way or another. I take the view that newspapers are suffering and if they can get more money by different forms of advetising so be it. I would not want newspapes to fail just because they didn’t try hard enough to survive. We after all are the end result of their profitability as are their shareholders.
