According to a report at the Guardian, dozens of newsagents in London are paying 2 pence a copy to distribute the now free London Evening Standard from their shops. Two months ago the Standard went from a paid model (50p) to free at the same time as changing its distribution model. Newsagents wanting the traffic are demonstrating a preparedness to pay for this.
Will we do this here?
Mark, I’m not sure how true those claims are.
The vague “dozens of newsagents” reads to me as the words of a business executive desperately spinning a bad situation made worse by his poor decisions.

Paul,
The Guardian is good with checking facts.

This is the same for a few “free” newspapers here as well. We had one of our elderly customers enquire about a Seniors newspaper. When I called to ask about them it was going to cost us $27.50 to have them in store.
Unfortuately the demand was not big enough for us to warrant this.
Being that he is a regular customer, I know pick one up from our local chemist to give to him each month.

It is interesting how this reconciles with the existing model. I have always maintained that 25% return per day is pretty good for a product that produces 40%+ of traffic – no?

Dennis part of the challenge is that newsagents who sell their distribution business revert to 12.5% (or thereabouts) return per day.

B we get about 200 of the senior papers per month and go through the lot… They have not cost us a cent, even though they have a cover price. We have thought about a donation/honesty box to distrubute proceeds to local charaties, but have not implemented…
I know there are a couple of different senior papers, which one are you referring to…

we have a local paper 3 times a week, the same publisher has a free paper which someone else distributes in our area. we get as many copies as we would like to give out also. but i only get 10 for putaways for the customers who do not get it because they are out of the delivery area.
i dont see the point in supplying 2 local papers, one which i would give away, or another with similar content, current, and a better advertisment/editorial ratio WHICH I CAN CHARGE AND MAKE MONEY FROM.
since we cut back the supply of the free paper, we have noticed an increase in sales of the paid one. which is the aim (for me anyways)
we are next door to a chemist in our strip which gives away the senior paper, so its not really an option for us.
be merry
