Managing the Simpsons Sticker campaign

simpson_stickers.JPGWe approached the management of the Herald Sun Simpsons Sticker campaign the same way we manage other newspapeer part series.  Customers can preorder the whole series.  We record their details on a sheet.  While we could use our point of sale software, it is faster and easier to use a single sheet to take track who has collected which part of the series.  We only accept preorders when the entire order is paid up front.

This would have been a good promo if the publishered engaged all retailers not just those in capital cities. We are in Northern NSW so our papers come from Brisbane not Sydney. We have been told that promotions are for QLD retailers only and we are not supplied any product.
In my view it is false advertising by the papers to state on the front cover something for free when they know full well that they are not supplying anything for free at all.
We have had customers venting at staff all weekend as if we have stolen their free stuff. This is not a one off it happens with all promos run by the Courier mail, they will not supply outside S.E QLD.

Luke, we find the same thing with some NSW promotions. Indeed, we often wish we weren’t included for some of them 😉

But being close to the border brings up those problems a lot, unfortunately.

My problem is why should the border mean anything, our papers have a heading that states northern NSW edition so why not take the Free promo off the cover, they know they are not supplying it so again I say false advertisement.

Exactly. More to the point, however, is that there is no advertising on the day at all!
Nationwide and GCP is a prime example. They seemingly can’t get Gold Coast Publications to print promotion editions, which is a nightmare. It shouldn’t be hard – GCP prints our Sunday Telegraphs, but neither publisher will actually talk to each other – or worse, talk to each other on agents’ behalf when impossible situations are brought about. GCB, being the publisher/printer, should be caring about what comes out of their factory. Tells the whole story of News Ltd, really. And neither of them have done anything about our feedback in relation to having no tokens etc on the day. Give me strength – I need it for when customers demand the promo item, but there isn’t even anything to advertise it in that day’s edition. So we just top the damn paper so they can have it.
Emails and phonecalls to Nationwide over the months have amounted to nought. Our own rep simply “passes on” our concerns.
So this situation doesn’t look like changing any time soon.

We shoud have (In honour perhaps of Hey Hey coming back) a ‘Wot Cheezes Me Orf’ column here. Like having a promo to sell more papers but not ever actually receiving more papers to sell!

Approx 6 hrs work involved over the period, on hands and knees 25 times per day searching for this junk, sold approx 250 Stick’Ems, collected 250 tokens, and what do I get for all this? $25 commission. Now that’s slave labour! Complained to the Mercury Newspaper and was reminded, in no uncertain terms, that I am under contract with them! Under contract to sell their junk, no matter how much labour is involved my end. I’m here to sell newspapers to my customers, not cheap rubbish. I witnessed no extra spin off sales from my locals and this campaign had all ready run on the mainland, so no extra tourists stopping in either. The Mercury stated they are not prepared to allow their newspaper vendors to opt in or out of these promotions – reminding me about that bloody contract, fair or not!

When we had them it was with the CM and sales were great while it was on but the day after it was back to normal so what does this achieve ?Most would buy the paper bet the stickem and throw the rest in the bin when they walked out of the shop
