Woman’s Day gets our prime counter position this week thanks to the free pack of Allen’s lollies which comes with every issue of Woman’s Day we sell. We know we are the only retailer of Woman’s Day out of five in our shopping centre to have this offer so it makes sense to promote in a prime location. We are using a recycled acrylic unit next to Woman’s Day to show off the free lollies – this is easier than handing them out with each purchase.
Before newsagents say they did not get this promotion – is is exclusive to the top tier of Connections newsagents.
And i was just about to have a winge about it untill i read the last line

Very tempting to add:

Another marketing plan is to give the small agents these promotions to assist in improving sales, ahhh by why bother?

Peter, it is easier for publishers to focus on the bigger stores.
Magazines are crucial to newsagencies. They drive traffic. This is why you should bother.

Which is why all newsagents should get promotions. They give these promotions to all supermarkets not just the top selling ones, so why discrimate with newsagents.

it think it is more to do with the magazine publishers bothering with the small agents to improve sales …

True, Shaun s.
I recall NDD not having a bar of this concept, despite the crap on IPMG’s website. Clearly they were talking about supermarkets, 711s and mega newsagencies.
Publishers and distributors (any supplier for that matter) want bang for their buck, so will only spend more on the places that will sell a shitload.
It is discriminatory. A bit like small buyers paying the premium, while the big buyers get massive discounts. And poor coca cola get all upset cos we can get their products cheaper at the supermarket rather buy from them for a king’s ransom?
Mags don’t generally work like this (do they???), but the downside is that we rarely get promotional material or deals.
But that’s the way it goes.
Thankfully our customers also understand this.

It is not discrimantory,it is helping those that help themselves.
Some agents can’t be bothered doing displays to create interest so why should they get the freebie?
If you know someone will utilise a freebie and display it well then you will support them.
Rather that complaining use your own initiative and do your own giveaways , use some of thos freebies from another promo to push a certain title instead of selling the giveaway for a quick buck and looking like a tight wad.

Mary , just because i am not in the “top tier”does not mean that i cannot think for my self and do my own displays and what ever else it takes to sell a magazine all it means is that i don’t get any support from ACP .And that is ACP that i support with the prime positions for their magazines !!!Oh i just rememberd that ACP once sent me a stand that i was asking for for almost 12 months to sell there magazines on and it finally arrived it was a second hand piece of junk that obviously came from one of the top tier stores that moved up a notch .

Mary,
Who the hell are you to assume that us smaller agencies are tightwads and aren’t prepared to make an effort?
For the record, we don’t sell freebies. Except for when we ask a coin donation to our Cancer Council tin, or murdered newsagent (or bushfire etc etc etc) tin. But 99.99999% of extras are given away gladly.
Any items left over from promotions, we build up to a good supply and variety, so we can periodically display them on the newsstand as free items there for the taking.
Re sales collateral: Space permitting, we’re happy to give mag promos a go. But we never really have (except for when we get a particularly good item – then we do our own) because nobody’s asked us.
I don’t necessarily have a problem with the prescribed Darwinian approach so popular here, but so often an unfortunate corollary to that thinking, is the elitist notion that nobody else is worthy of breath.
Mary, I’ve always tried to express a balanced view around issues like this, acknowledging things that I’m not necessarily in agreeance with, but nonetheless, exist.
You’re just being a prat.

Shaun … if you want a high quality unit – why don’t you go and buy one instead of complaining about the quality of one that has been given to you for FREE!

For free for free my ass i have been paying a shit load for this stand in over supplied stock for the last 2 years ..geoff do you honestly think they would have the balls to send a second hand stand to one of marks store .. My complaint is more to do with giving us all a fair go i am sure that marks shops make ACP a hell of a lot of money but i can also guarantee you that there are a lot of smaller newsagents that make ACP a lot of money to…..geoff at the end of the day it is not even about the stand

Shaun, it is extremely rare that ACP would oversupply. They run on a tight budget – so they can fund the debt of the owners who bought the business a couple of years ago. Their print runs are usually set by ad revenue.
In terms of second hand stands, I have received these in the pasy – ocne they are dressed you can’t tell.
