Promoting lottery tickets online

powerball_30_mil.jpgClick on the image to see a larger version of the front page of The Guardian website which I saw this morning – when I access ed the site from Victoria.  Acorss the top is a Powerball ad.  The ad was pulsing – making clicking this compelling.  The ad took me to the Golden Casket site which offered me a selection of Powerball numbers and all I needed to do was enter a Queesnland address to register and purchase.  While I understand the desire of lottery companies to drive their higher margin online sales, I wish they would proactively promote the retail network from their website.  We promote their brand freely in our stores after all.

“We promote their brand freely in our stores after all.”

Well, it’s not really ‘freely’, given that they pay a royalty/commission to you…

Phillip, they pay a commission on sales. The brand is represented in every littery retailer as a billboard to passers by.

It is the perception of people like Phillip that makes me want to give up on lotto. We only make commission as Mark states on SALES, not checking tickets not paying out, not putting up results, and not on having a dedicated lotto area in store.

We still have people ask if they won the $90 million how much do we get, and I tell them bugger all except for a little sign that reads Yeeha for me.

People need to understand lotteries are at best break even for newsagents and a lot of the time it is a loss leader to get people into the store, think about this next time you demand you old ticket to be checked and then walk out without purchase, it gives me the sh#*ts at 4am in the morning especially when you did not buy the ticket at my shop.
