Is shoplifting on the rise?

Several of our stores have reported repeat visits from shoplifters this week.  In each case these we recognised from video of prior theft.  When we approached them they left – before security arrived.  maybe it is just us but it feels like there is more theft activity now than six months ago.

On the flip side.. I’m noticing retailers trying to rip people off with change more lately, especially fast food/cafes, etc. Generally have been receiving change for a $20 when I’m giving them a $50, and really have to force these retailers to show they’re wrong.

On topic, the type of store I operate (electrical) is prone to rather severe shoplifting.. main areas been headphones/earphones and ipod accessories.

I think that the increase in shoplifting is just a reflection on the lack of respect for others in society at present.
The people we catch stealing give us the sob story that they are doing it tuff financially at the moment and wouldn’t normally steal, yer right but when I ask them why do they think I can afford theft in my shop they say because I own my own business I must be doing OK.
People only think about themselves and cannot be bothered who else they hurt so shoplifting is a natural step, I’ll get mine and bugger the shop owner.
The good thing for us is we have a great relationship with the police and I make sure all shoplifters are taken away and charged even if they will be let off by soft courts. Nothing like a good public shameing being taken away by police for stealing.
