Fake $50 notes

Fake $50 notes are circulating in Melbourne – we got caught with one this week. The Age late last year published a video which showed how to spot a fake $50.

We had it circulate around christmas time.. we never got hit thankfully. Essentially the easiest way that we were told to detect was that the clear window has really fake, stupid looking stars in random shapes/orientation, and that the note rips extremely easily.

Also told that many fraudsters will slip the note inbetween genuine notes, so to take care for each note looked at.

Does the absence of printed names under the portraits, the absence of the numbers 50 in the clear plastic constitute a fake $50? I’ve seen 3 over this weekend but not a thing about them in the press.

    Rob,

The RBA last week stated that a note is note necessarily fake just because it does not have the name in the middle. This was actually a design change which came into place a few years ago meaning a note with a name is old and one without is new. A stupid design change if you ask me.
They also said our odds of receiving one were 1 in 10,000 but I guess someone has to cop it.
    Hope this helps.

we have had 2 in our shop very good fakes the bank staff are counting the money by hand as its only when you have several that you can feel the difference and the stars will scratch off with a finger nail
