Are newsagencies opening later?

Three newsagencies I visited between 6:10am and 6:20am earlier this week were closed.  I had to get the newspaper I wanted from a 7-Eleven. I’d be curious to know if newsagencies are opening later than they used to.  In my own businesses we are in centres and no longer have runs so we open Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8am and Monday, Wednesday and friday at 7am.

To those wondering, I was half an hour from my own newsagencies and was not planning on visiting them on this particular day.

I just opened then (6:13AM*), customers waiting out the door, so I’m stuck at opening at six.

Being open from six to six lets our customers know they’ve got “all day” to get lotto/papers etc.

I’d like it to more of an eight hour day, but that won’t work because before nine and after four are my busiest times of day.

    *Rarely late for good reason.

We open from 6am to 6pm, we used to open at 4am but now the papers do not arrive until 5:30-6am so it is no point opening if I have no daily papers to sell. Magazines also are arriving later.

Open at 6 on the dot Mon-Fri. Weekends, open at 6:30 on the dot. Customers love this, mainly because previous operators were very unreliable, particularly on weekends. Surrounding accommodation operators were relieved to be able to tell their customers our hours, and not be made to feel silly, because the shop would indeed be open!

Would love to open later in the winter, but workers would not be stopping for coffee/papers etc so best to miss that wee sleepin…

We open at 5. Our most profitable time of day is before 7am – people buy ink, gifts, stationery, magazines. It’s a convenience market. We still sell heaps of papers, smokes and drinks but the other stuff makes it very worthwhile.

When we purchased Seymour, the opening hours each day were 3.30am, 7 days a week.
I had a close look at what was being sold during 3.30am and 5.00am, and quickly made the decision to change our opening hours to 5.00am Mon to Sat, & 6.00am on Sundays.
98% of items sold were a single newspaper; the volume of transactions from 3.30am to 5.00am was lucky to reach double figures. The previous owners told me it was a community service being open that early. Yeah right!
