Promoting Zoo Weekly half price

fhn_zoo_may05.JPGZoo Weekly is half price this week, at $1.95.  We are promoting it in a counter unit in prime position at our main lottery counter.

While I’d prefer to make regular cover price margin, I’m happy to use the offer to find new regular customers.

You are right it is a fantastic price for our customers, they need a good deal now and then and it is great to see Network contine what EMAP started. I will not spoil this thread regarding the commission that also EMAP started regarding these promotions.

Network at least are trying to draw new and old customers attention by this bargain buy.

Nelson- This is off the post topic but I feel it needs a reply .

Like you I listened to the Podcast, http://www.newsagencyblog.com.au/2009/04/03/newsagency-industry-podcast.html and I was encouraged by some of what was said particularly what Eugene Varricchio had to say regarding some issues in our printed part of our business others were encouraged on other compliance, I am sure you were also!

I also know that Eugene Varricchio reads this web blog as do many related to the industry.

That is why we all should be actively blogging or using other media outlets to ensure issues go direct and are highlighted. Mark uses that technology well, particularly if someone searches via the internet.

I have recently had a change of heart and will be writing to my States Association as they welcome Members and Non Members feedback and will undertake to get my particular beef to the relevant party.

Imagine if only 10% of all Newsagents did this?

I use some of Mark’s posts to continue to highlight some below the belt happennings that occur in our business that really irk me. I also do the reverse if i see or hear something good.

Maybe their was a reason that the commission issue was not mentioned or maybe Mark did not want to blind side him, I am not defending Mark for not bringing it up and maybe it should off.

Mark is only but 1 man and our industry has a few thousand Men & Women working the Industry.

I found a past blog relating that relates to an issue of commission of Zoo

    http://www.newsagencyblog.com.au/2008/09/23/promoting-zoo-weekly.html#comments

I will be writing to my States Association to ask them to help this sort of thing happening again, The Zoo & Alpha issue should not of happened, Newsagents build both these magazines up to unbelievale circulations figures.

I am going to ask that no Newsagency should take part in these types of permanent promotions again without it being vetted and put on paper and signed off by the Association. This will hopefully stop them using Newsagents and then throwing them away once there publications reach the outstanding circulation figures they have now.

We all should be doing little things like that, some associations dont know that there is a bruharr, if they know they will help, this occurred just recently to me when I contacted NANA, their was very little noise about ALPHA that came through them. I was dissapointed with Newsagents that day when i was told.

I see the Zoo promotion as good for the title and good for us. It is not abused – maybe twice a year. If it was monthly then that would be a different situation.

Agreed! Its a great mag and its good for customers.

As you can see, people including me felt abused as a retailer when Zoo was taken over by ACP when EMAP folded.

EMAP gave I believe commission of 25% of what the normal RRP was at the time when it reduced Zoo to $2.50 or $1.95 around 8 times a year. Now that was great Marketing!

Almost immediatley after ACP picked up Zoo after EMAP folded we all received notification from ACP that it would not be doing the same. Normal 25% commission no matter. To be that was a kick in the guts.

That is why Associations have to put a stop to this abuse my Publishers! I am writing a small letter from one of the smallest operators in the country, we need someone to stop this commission when its suits us mentality.

Its not much different to the ALPHA situation. Newsagents really worked hard for Zoo in regards to promoting it and it is now No.1 in its category. This promotion happens more than twice a year, its closer to 6 to 8 weeks .

See your posts in the link posted in this thread, you were not happy!

Of course I would like the commission on the regular cover price.

That said, I have researched the UK strategy on Zoo cover price which developed sales and see this working here.

Also, it is only done two, maybe three, times a year and on that basis the cost to us is not great and the opportunity considerable.

    Alpha is completely different.

We both agree on different things here, I am sure it is more than 2 or 3 times a year.

What I am really saying is ACP took away the commission structure that had existed without a blink of an eye in respect of Newsagents. Publishers has to stop doing this, we are not doormats! They should consult and wait until feedback can be generated.

If any one knows if ACP informed any Association regarding this I would like to know and I will stand corrected.

I count 8 times that Zoo reduced their price from $4.25 to $2.50 in 2008.

Once to $2.50 and twice to $1.95 so far this year…

If I want to cut the price on my stationary then i cop a loss in profit but how is it fair when we dont get a say?
