The government owned Australia Post shop opposite our newsXpress Forest Hill store has changed its hours on a Saturday. It now closes at 1pm. Tenants in a shopping centre have an obligation to support each other. We rely on the traffic Australia Post pulls as do other retailers nearby – indeed we rely on each other. It is the government ownership of Australia Post which allows them to get away with this arrogant behaviour.
Why is it AP’s responsibility to bring your customers in???? This makes no sense….. it’s not arrogance, it’s business sense. Perhaps the taxpayer money either saved by not opening as late, or money made by opening longer (you don;t indicate) means that the Government will have more money to throw at the newsagency/small business industry…………….?

Daniel,
Shopping centre management strategically places high traffic, destination-based tennants in key locations around the centre. They use them to direct traffic around as much of the centre as possible.
I assume that other retailers in the centre are requiredm, via the terms of their lease, to stay open during periods that Australia Post is closed.

Daniel,
We are forced to operate certain hours. Australia Post is often exempted from these obligations.
The government has never thrown money at the newsagency channel.

Daniel, the centres charge rent based on what they claim are the “benefits” of having certain tenants. If one of those “traffic driver” tenants does not open then there should be a consequent reduction in the rent charged to other tenants.

Maybe they shut because they know you sell stamps?
You’d be appeasing their customers by doing this.
It’s still frustrating when a tenant shuts down for whatever, I have four in my complex that shut on a Monday, effectively closing down the bottom half of it. I’m lucky to be in the upper half.
-You haven’t stated if you sell stamps strictly with a card or envelope only.
