The challenge of tobacco retailing

Newsagents who sell tobacco products would do well to read Steven Denham’s blog post on the challenges they are facing in newsagencies in the UK.  We are seeing various changes here in Australia – SA, NSW to name two.

Retailers should use their security shutters as a canvas for advertising. This is an excellent opportunity.

Almost all the fixtures provided by the major tobacco companies (BA, PM and Imperial) have been designed to be easily changed over when any legislation requiring tobacco to be non-visible comes into effect. This has been the case for some years now. The cost to most Australian retailers, in terms of fixtures, will be nil.

    Hi, Jarryd.

I wrote a letter to local MP and had some discussion with her on a business meeting regarding to the public health (tobacco) Act.2008 and its impact on small business. I stated that this is a positive move while as small business owners, we need time and resouce to prepare the impact.

She was then-health minister, and understood its impact to small businesses.

She forwarded the letter to Steve, the Minister for Small business. Steve replied with the goverment resouce listed:

    1. contact the NSW Government Business Advisory Services (BAS) to discuss implementation issues.

    2. The department of State and Regional Development is running a series of seminars titled “Managing Through Turbulent Times”. The seminars covers issues such as cashflow management, marketing and sales in June.

    3. Ohter seminars such as “Recession Proof Marketing” and “Survive or Thrive – The Savvy Small Business Person’s Guide to Tough Economic Times”.

I think that these seminars are general measures, which we can make use of them. We need some urgent measures to prepare this impact 12 months later.

When I discussed with nearby newsagents, they don’t have much ideas yet.

    Cheers,

    Sunny
