Beware of books

I have heard of plans to supply books and book-like product to newsagents through traditional supply channels.  From what I understand the offer (in its present form) is unlikely to be as competitive as that put to traditional bookshops.  Current release books need to be provided on a sale or return basis at 45% margin.  Without this we are not able to be competitive on price against book retailers often located near newsagencies.

I don’t mind selling cheap paperbacks and dictionaries, but I don’t think the book thing works well – have a look at 4 ingredients.

It also causes the customer to be confused, like “you’ve got these books, why don’t you sell this one”?

I sounds like the distributors are again taking the opportunity to make an easy buck out of us – again. But then again it’s hearsay at the moment.

    Michael,

I agree. You have to be in the book space wholeheartedly or not at all.

I don’t mind the odd book – as long as it has a strong tie to existing core products. Newsagents need to be given the option of taking a book, not just allocated it. If we could have competed on price with 4 Ingredients we would have happily ordered enough to give it promotional space. We need to be sending distributors and publishers a message until we get conscionable margin on books. Keep sending them back.
