We have been talking across our newsagencies about our price policy for diaries and when to contemplate discounting the 2009 range. With excellent sales still being achieved – $500 to $900 a day Friday last week and again today across our stores – we feel no need to contemplate discounting at this point.
I was in a newsagency yesterday where their diaries are at 50% off. They told me they did this because another store was discounting. The newsagent has a bigger and better range. This is why we don’t need to discount. It demonstrates the value of a point of difference.
Totally agree. Can never understand why retailers discount diaries at the very beginning of the year. Calendars are a different story………..

diaries are quite the performer in our store, in this age of technology the humble diary is still a star performer. We have never had to discount diaries who wants to turn another newsagency line into a prostitution of calenders and now boxed christmas and the like, not me.

My only concern might be that it does take the route of calendars in the eyes of those that already discount them heavily. It was disconcerting to see our local Australia Post still selling boxed cards at 50% off this morning.
I have a stationery shop right next door to me with a very large spinner right out the front with a huge handwritten sign declaring 25% off. The spinner has been there since November. It’s smoke & mirrors as his standard price was around 30% over average retail but with the “discount” sign he attemps to create the impression of a bargain. Lucky for me we already sell at a reasonable price which was 30% lower than his supposed standard they have been discounted from.
When you consider the current theme of “discounts” in this economic climate I would not be too surprised to see an increased emphasis by some retailers to adopt a seasonal discount approach right from the off. In my case it is right next door and I lose out to those customers that are fooled by the signage and go in and make a purchase.
