We have had Groovy Grandmas, a new magazine, on the shelf for three weeks. We allocated four pockets in a good location near high volume titles speaking to the same demographic. We have not sold a single copy. Given the lack of sales, the real-estate the stock is taking and the four month on-sale, we are returning half the supplied stock today. I am all for supporting new titles but without a single copy sold in three weeks something had to give. If the result next month is no better the remaining copies will be returned.
I would feel differently is there was a well funded campaign supporting the title or if we were only billed for sales. The magazine distribution model is such that we need to look carefully at new titles like Groovy Grandmas and act to mitigate our losses.
I would also feel differently if I have been consulted about receiving this title in the first place. This is what I do with another distributor and it allows me to buy-in to launches.
We gave it a prime spot for three weeks and then placed it near both the puzzle and That’s Five magazines – still haven’t sold one.
Maybe there aren’t enough groovy grandmas out there??? I only ever saw one person browse it so it maybe this issue’ cover is the problem?

I purchased Groovy Grandmas and can honestly say that it is the best mag I have ever purchased. I actually read it from cover to cover and have now subscribed on line. Love it! Maybe some women don’t like to be called Grandma.

I’ve now sold two of them and the two customers actually said the same thing – the best magazine they’ve purchased!
I’m now happy to have a standing order of two of them per quarter but not fourteen.
