UK debate on placement of lads magazines

There is an interesting debate in the UK about where lads magazines like Zoo should be placed in retail.  These magazines are cheeky but not what I’d call harmlful.  The last thing newsagents need is more regulation about what to display and where.

I agree. I can’t believe this kind of censorship is even being considered. What era are we living in?

What annoys me about this whole debate is the hypocrisy from the advocates. Have a look at the popular women’s magazines on our shelves: uninvited intrusion into other people’s lives with speculation and innuendo, problem solving by psychics rather than professional counsellors, and magazines with just as much sexual focus as the men’s abound and sell well. Apparently there is nothing wrong with this. At the end of the day, I think these magazines are designed to titillate rather than educate, and are no better or worse than magazines like Zoo. I keep Zoo at the front of my shop rather than with the other light-weight men’s mags and have never had a complaint.
