Origami DVD rip off

origamidvd.JPGNewsagents were sent this Origami DVD today.  We are supposed to keep it on our shelves until May next year.  The retail price is $19.95.  Our margin, on each copy sold, is $4.99.  This will cost us over $4.00 a month for the retail space and labour to manage the product.  I am early-returning our shipment of five copies.  I am not prepared to take cover the risk of theft.  It is a difficult title to place.  It is grossly overpriced.  I can find the equivalent information online for free.  This title should never have been permitted into our channel.

The supply of this title through our channel with a seven month on sale is a gross abuse of small business newsagents by the publisher and the distributor.  We are fools if we let them get away with it.  My stock is being mailed back to NDD and short paying invoices for this month by the quantity involved.  I would be interested to hear from other newsagents about this title.

We got learn to drive instruction DVDs. Much the same story – much of the information is free on the internet. And at $19.95 its not exactly an impulse item.

Same here, as soon as i saw the title it reaffirmed what i have been saying for months. Regardless of economic times, we will continue to pay the distributors the same amounts, if not more, as they have complete control over what they send us. If they cannot increase allocation, they will find an obscure title to send to us.

when we ‘dump’ our weekly supply of returns stock at the NDD depot in Brisbane it is invariably left in a caged container out in the weather. Important documentation is often attached to some of this stock and I can only imagine what condition it must be in when they decide to bring it in out of the rain. And they wonder why we get a little annoyed when we query inaccurracies in our monthly accounts.
the origami dvd was folded into the shape of a plane and we flew it back in the general direction of the ndd depot

I have the DVD and my kids love it. They have made a few of the models now, all on their own. Maybe the price isnt what you like, or others would like but I would certainly spend $20 on something worthwhile for me AND my kids to enjoy than some video game or movie. It is relaxing and also teaches hand eye coordination. Maybe if you had it where people could see it before xmas it would sell. Just a thought..
